I was advising an actor who was talking about how hard this whole "moving to LA" thing was feeling. Stress from the family. Doubts introduced by well-meaning friends. Leaving behind a decent job and a network of support. Choosing to follow a dream, thousands of miles away, alone (starting over on building up friendships and connecting with a community). I said, "Living your dreams is hard. Moving across the country alone is hard. Finding (and keeping) a good survival job is hard. Starting over is hard. The thing is, that's where most people stop the list. And here's what you need to know: NOT living your dreams is hard. Staying in a place just because it's where all of your relatives are located is hard. Rolling around on a plastic pad behind a desk at a passionless job because it pays well and provides security that others in your life seem to value is hard. Staying stuck and wondering what would've been if you HAD chosen to live your dreams is hard. So, PICK YOUR HARD." That's the whole point: We get to pick our hard. There's no one course of life that's easier, predictably, before we start out on its path. We can't know what twists and turns any of our life's choices will present to us. Just as we can't take two routes to our vacation destination simultaneously, we can only drive the road we're on, and there are times that road is going to be hard. But just as some folks prefer the "hard" of freeway traffic to surface streets, some artists prefer the "hard" of pursuing their dreams, unapologetically, sometimes alone, but focused and committed, to the "hard" of a regular paycheck, health insurance, a 401K, and "casual Fridays." When it gets hard--and it will--remind yourself that you get to pick your hard. Bad audition? Stuck on a plot point in a script you're writing? Released from avail after being sure the gig was yours? Dropped by your agent just when things were starting to pick up? Edited out of the final cut of the film you told everyone you'd shot? Told you're too old or too skinny or too ethnic or too anything else for whatever particular role you really want to play? Snubbed in the casting room? Hating your reel after having spent a ton on it? Missing your family back home? Yep. It's all hard. The only thing harder is not pursuing your dream.

Bring your career to the next tier (and the next)

No matter where your live or how old you are, if you’re considering your acting life seriously, you need this book NOW.
Every page is a gem.

P.S : As I was about to post my review, I saw someone had given only 1 star to this most wonderful book. The only info we get from it is that this person hasn’t read this new edition. Which gives me the opportunity to say two things :

1. I read the previous edition as well. I loved it. But I was in awe as I read the 4th edition (like a novel… I just couldn’t put the damn thing down), to see how much Bonnie Gillespie had literally rewritten a new book from scratch. Her writing is superb, alive, funny, enticing and yet, as she says, she killed her babies which requires a lot of courage. By doing so, she applied the very principles she gives : � clear the clutter! �, � move on! �. This girl definitely practices what she preaches. Very inspiring. Which leads me to my second point.

2. Bonnie Gillespie is a spiritual person. Highly spiritual. Whether she knows it or not. Her book is filled with sharing our toys, being open source, having the proper mindset, never taking it personally, enjoying the journey and loving, loving, loving : others, our craft, the audition process, where we’re at right now, L.A or wherever we live, our agent, our manager or the very fact of having none of them. Like any masterpiece, and I have no doubt this book will become THE reference for actors around the globe, Bonnie’s book goes way further than getting down to (show) business. It’s a journey in itself. You’re another person after you’ve read it. A better person.

So, read it NOW to make sure you never end up reviewing a book you haven’t read. Otherwise, like this 1 star reviewer, you’ll become a 1 star actor. The ones that are unhappy when others succeed, the ones that think the casting director is their enemy, the ones that shatter themselves with a low esteem and a high ego. So, like I happily did with this precious book, give yourself 5 stars and go shine to let us know that this dreamy acting life can also be a reality if you properly manage yourself. This book gives you all the keys you need to achieve that goal.

The only acting business book you'll need.

I want to encourage all actors of any level to pick up and read Casting Director Bonnie Gillespie's book Self-Management for Actors.
I picked it up yesterday and I cannot put it down. It opens my eyes to the things I didn't know or think about and reaffirms what I did know. Most importantly it assures me that I chose the right career despite the ups and downs of the industry. This gives you the information that acting classes don't -the BUSINESS of acting. In all of my podcast listening and researching of acting info online, I keep running into this book. It's for good reason everyone is talking about it. Pick it up!

I have read previous editions of this book, and they have all been great, but this one is by far my favorite. It is updated with the latest information and trends in the business, as well as updated technologies.

As an actor, I have spent thousands of dollars on books, classes and seminars in almost every aspect of this business. And while I have learned a lot, and they have all had varying degrees of impact on my career, I can say that Bonnie and her teachings have not only been the most helpful, they have made me feel more positive and in control of my career than anything else ever has. And in a business where the product you are selling is "you" and there is no one way to achieve success, feeling like you are on a path and feeling good about yourself and your game plan is HUGE.

The thing I love most about this book, is that it doesn't claim to be "the answer". There are no rules. There are not 20 steps you need to follow that will land you a part as a series regular on a major network. If somebody claims that have THE ANSWERS, run away. Quickly. You have to forge your own way, and find out what works for you personally and for the specific story you are trying to tell as an actor. And for that, this book is amazing. It has not only helped me become really specific in my marketing tools, but it has saved me hundreds of hours by helping to realize all the time I was wasting on certain activities that were not working for me, but that I kept doing because the acting community has collectively decided "that is what actors should do".

I know it sounds corny to say, but this book has not only helped me with my acting career, but it has helped me become more connected to myself and my intuition. I think the most important word in the title is SELF. It'a all about figuring out who you are, and what you want out of life and this business.

While reading this book I have had so many new realizations and ideas that I have implemented. And so many seemed so obvious once I saw them, but they had never even crossed my mind before. I re-read the book as my career begins to advance, and I always find the answers I am looking for.

Lastly, this book has made me remember the importance of community, and how vital it is to connect with others-not only as an actor, but as a human being. I've been extremely active now in my acting network, and have found just how great it feels to help others along the way.

I cannot recommend this book more highly. I wish you success on your career and hope you find what works for you!

Amazing Book--Must Reading for All

I read this book years ago and it still sticks with me. As a reporter in Vietnam, Halberstam was a thorn in the side of the Johnson and Nixon administration. He was watched by Nixon's plumbers and the FBI; Nixon thought he was a subversive. What he is is an exceptionally perceptive historian. In this book he follows the growth of the media industry from newsprint to magazines, radio and television. He told the Edward R. Murrow story before anybody else and his details on Watergate are even more frightening than Woodward and Bernstein's "All the President's Men." Halberstam seems to have that unique capacity to crawl inside the heads of people like Luce who gave us Time magazine. From their perspective, and those of everyday reporters, we see the struggle to balance grasping for the truth and the glory of the headline. We begin to understand how McCarthy could rise to power by using the deadline to sneak in enuedos about people. The author does a masterful job of showing the frustration of reporters and editors and how they finally overcame McCarthy's sinister power. This is an excellent book, not only for journalist but also for those who wish to understand the power of the media in shaping our world.

This is an incredible documentation on the workings of the political system - powerful unelected individuals who have a strong impact on our government - and how the fourth branch of government, the media, uses its power.

Read if you DARE

Read all the other reviews for the media impacting intent which is only a small part of Halverstam's real message in spite of the title of this epoch. Halberstam's media message ranges from imformative to scarry.

But that which will stick with me forever is the way Halberstam delivers the frailty and fate of America to a mere mortal, the President of the United States. Eisenhower fiddles, Kennedy charms, Johnson screams and Nixon frightens. It took Halberstam seven years to research and write this book and after you read it you will wonder how he did it so fast, a monumental effort.

Fortunately the truth is often downright funny. Nixon's twenty eight year old publicity man making a side comment that Nixon looks like he drops down out of his closet every morning in the same rumbled suit and badly in need of a shave.

Halberstam conveys how power was for the taking and that those who had it developed it primarily in accordance with their own agendas, personal or family politics and use it and us in the process.

No matter that this is now just history ending with Watergate. Halberstam's real message is that the circumstances he describes will remain the same in any generation.

The Powers That Be may change the way you think of power and how it affects you.

Jim Meredith is an innovative and accomplished artist whose talent has flourished with the encouragement of the author, Diane Isaacs, his new wife. No one would be happier to see this than Karen Weiss, the beautiful mate he was mourning when he met Diane. Karen was a wise and witty writer much cherished by our whole family. The last time I saw her was at the memorial service for my playwright husband, Oliver Hailey, her mentor. Karen died a month later. I share with Jim and Diane a vivid awareness of the continuing presence in my life of an absent and irreplaceable partner and yet their marriage confirms my faith that the future holds still unimagined possibilities. About the Author
DIANE ISAACS was born and educated in Los Angeles. After her children were almost grown, she returned to school. She started from the beginning at Pasadena City College, receiving an AA with honors in Political Science for Superior Achievement. During that time she did an independent research on The Holocaust, and then continued on to receive her bachelor s degree in the field of Human Development from Pacific Oaks College. From there Diane went on to Phillips Graduate Institute where she received her master s degree in Marriage and Family Counseling and is today, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. In 1994 Diane completed her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology. Her background includes special training in Management of Stress, Human Sexuality, Menopause, and the Psychology of Color. She is specially trained and certified to deal with issues of grief and has been on the faculty at Pasadena City College where she taught Early Childhood Development. Diane has been an advocate representative, nationally and locally, for the International Fibromyalgia Network, where she counsels individuals with Fibromyalgia, Crisis Management, and Referral Services. Her specialization is in Dual Career Marriages, Human Sexuality, Groups, Self Esteem, and Relationship issues, and she is now working with families to deal with chronic illness, death and grief. Currently, she is devoting part of her time to writing. Diane s professional speaking experience includes being a speaker on Stress In the Medical Marriage for the National Council on Family Relations Annual Conference Program in Dallas, Texas in 1985. She has facilitated many workshops on Self Esteem and Its Importance In Our Everyday Life. She has been a co-facilitator for the Southern California Arthritis Association in local areas for the disease Fibromyalgia. Diane was a guest speaker at the First World Congress on Electroejaculation for the Infant International Symposium, in conjunction with Urologists from all over the world, in the field of Human Sexuality. She has spoken in the Los Angeles area to physicians wives on Stress in the Medical Marriage for many district organizations in the Los Angeles County Medical Association Alliance. From 1974 through 1993 Diane worked for her late husband, as a business manager, and liaison between patients and physicians. She has published a paper entitled, Stress in the Medical Marriage, which is on file in several research libraries. Her latest paper was her published dissertation entitled, The Counseling Psychology and Sociological Impact of Liver Transplantation on Liver Recipients and Their Families. Diane is a member of LACMA (Los Angeles County Medical Association Alliance); the La Ca�ada Chamber of Commerce, Alumni of Pacific Oaks, and Phillips Graduate Institute. She is also a member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapists, as well as the California Association of American Marriage and Family Therapists. Other organizations include the American Association of University Women, and Ort. She resides with her new husband Jim, and her beloved Molly and Monet in La Ca�ada, California. She is spending her time in a small private practice and writing her next book.

Charming and clever approach!

This book was easy to read. It offered a charming twist to a serious situation. When I first saw the title, I thought it was about a little girl being introduced to a famous artist, but soon learned I was wrong. I thoroughly enjoyed the story...not sure enjoyed is the right word, as it was based on tragic events.......but it showed how human strengths prevail.

Content that heals

This book was referred to me after being diagnosed with a devastating disease. I was hesitant. What are two dogs going to tell me that I haven't already heard? Well, was I surprised at how healing this little story has been to me. Nothing too heavy but content that brought peace to a very uncertain time in my life. Thank you, Diane, for this story!

This book is an integrated treatment of applied statistical methods, presented at an intermediate level, and the SAS programming language. It serves as an advanced introduction to SAS as well as how to use SAS for the analysis of data arising from many different experimental and observational studies. While there are many introductory texts on SAS programming, statistical methods texts that solely make use of SAS as the software of choice for the analysis of data are rare. While this is understandable from a marketability point of view, clearly such texts will serve the need of many thousands of students and professionals who desire to learn how to use SAS beyond the basic introduction they usually receive from taking an introductory statistics course. More recently, several authors in statistical methodology have begun to incorporate SAS in their texts but these books are limited to more specialized subjects.

Many of the standard topics covered in statistical methods texts supplemented by advanced material more suited for a second course in applied statistics are included, so that specific aspects of SAS procedures can be illustrated. Brief but instructive reviews of the statistical methodologies used are provided, and then illustrated with analysis of data sets used in well-known statistical methods texts. Particular attention is devoted to discussions of models used in each analysis because the authors believe that it is important for users to have not only an understanding of how these models are represented in SAS but also because it helps in the interpretation of the SAS output produced.

Mervyn G. Marasinghe is Associate Professor of Statistics at Iowa State University where he teaches several courses in statistics and statistical computing and a course in data analysis using SAS software. A former Associate Editor of the Journal Computational and Graphical Statistics, he has used SAS software for more than 30 years.

William J. Kennedy is Professor Emeritus of Statistics at Iowa State University. A Fellow of the American Statistical Association and former Editor of The American Statistician and Journal of Computational and Graphical Statistics, he is coauthor of the book entitled Statistical Computing.

Good but dated already

This book is designed to be a 2nd quarter graduate level statistics text for non-math majors. It features good writing, and well annotated code and output. Some sections have math up-to and including matrix algebra but strong math skills are not essential to use the book. The topics include:

Chapter 1: Introduction to SAS
Input and retain statements for loading and manipulating data

If you have the bad luck of getting data as a "complex" text file, where SAS can not automatically guess the format when you use the import procedure, this chapter alone makes the book worth the money. It is a GREAT discussion of reading complex text files.

Chapter 2: More on SAS Programing and Some Applications
Univariate statistics, proc plot, proc chart and proc tabulate for very early 1980s looking graphics

Chapter 3: Statistical Graphics Using SAS/Graph

At the time of this review SAS 9.2 is out and it makes the graphics in this book (1/4 of the material) absolutely obsolete. If you are learning SAS with SAS 9.1.3 then this has very worthwhile coverage of the topics above. If you are using 9.2 you will want to sit down with the online documentation for the new graphics to look up the plots instead of using the code in the book. This would have been a 5 star book filling in topics not well covered in the SAS Press books if it was published 4 years ago. Sadly, it needs a 2nd edition already.

forgotten humour

I have had this book for ages now. It was bought for me as I am a fan of the Carry On films.
I read about all of the films and saw the Confessions films on television, I thought that they were fun. To me these films are only one step up from the Carry On's, in there sex content.
I found them so good I made it my mission in life to find these movies and watch as many as I could. This book has become invaluable to me as a reference book.
People are so busy trying to be politically correct that they have forgotten how to laugh, at the women and the men! Do we have to analyse everything? can't we just enjoy it?

KEEPING THE BRITISH MOVIE INDUSTRY -"UP"...

Simon Sheridan has if you can pardon this and other puns in this piece, done a "bang-up" job of documenting the history of sex movies in British cinema. From the nudist films of the 1950's to the titilating "sex-coms" of the 1960's and 70's, it's all here in chronological detail complete with movie stills, posters and "behind the scenes" stories. Now if you're already thinking that this subject is something you'll find unintersting or offensive, well let me just say that it's really the same as watching Benny Hill on TV or a "Carry On" movie that basically pioneered the whole genre in the first place. Only it's taken to the next step or mis-step depending on your tolerance for such things. With titles like "Confession's Of A Window Cleaner", "Can You Keep It Up For A Week", "I'm Not Feeling Myself Tonight" and alike, this was the state of the British movie industry in the 70's and was all that was keeping it alive. A far cry from the day's of the great Ealing comedies and epics like "Lawrence Of Arabia", it was a sign of the times. Whereas in America "hard core" films like "Deep Throat" were becoming the "in-thing", that kind of pornography was still very much illegal in Britain. So to enhance the "soft core" simulated sex, the comedic element was added in typical naughty British "seaside humour" style. Indeed, many of the same big name comedic actors who were on TV, found their way into doing cameos in these pictures. You even had such stars as Joan Collins stripping off in "The Bitch" and "The Stud", thats right the same star of TV's "Dynasty". You had veteran directors like Val Guest and American Jack Arnold, trying their hand at it. As well as newcomers like Martin Campbell, who later went on to direct a few James Bond movies. Big name studios like EMI and Columbia Pictures, certainly didn't mind getting in on the act either.

As the author saids "these were movies that put boobs on screens and bums on seats". What with most of Britain's cinema's already converted to bingo halls and supermarkets, exhibitor's were desperate to get the public or as they like to say over here "punters", to fill up those seats. As you might expect -they did and it prooved very profitable specially when they were produced so cheaply and so fast. I can even remember going to my local ABC theatre in London and getting amused and somewhat modestly aroused by them. Looking back, it's all very dated and tame by today's "in your face" digital standards. A good supplement to this book, is Sheridan's other book on Amazon, a look at British sex star Mary Millington in "Come Play With Me". Taken from the title of Mary's biggest hit sexcom, which also incidently holds the record for being the longest-ever theatrical booking in British cinema history!

4 decades of filthy funny

The book is a solid collection of quick blurbs about every single British sex comedy, sex thriller, sex drama, and just plain sex movie you can find or probably not find outside of UK itself. It covers pretty much everything you can think of from a glorious culture that realized anything in it's language is a potential double entendre, which that's sex joke for the less classy in the crowd. It's not joking about 4 decades of material being covered.

It's a fun book complete with a forward by a starlet who used to work in more than a few of the movies covered in here. I use starlet loosely as she seems more like a working actress (not famous but getting those parts) taking what she could and now making cash on it again in her old age, which makes her classier than Helen Mirren who still can't keep it on. I mean I know of aging Britt Ekland fans but don't know of any Sue Longhurst ones. Personally, I'm a Julie Ege fan for her work in Not Now Darling, which is covered in this book and is a solidly funny and fun film involving an increasingly disrobed, unreasonable home wrecking Mrs Ege. Mrs Longhurst does do a good job with the intro and it's nice to have someone there giving us a rundown of the time.

The info itself is good. It's got cast lists, production crews, alternate titles, and even stills from the films they could find. They got stuff from the family friendly (not anymore by today's prudish PC standards) Carry On films, which are Benny Hill meets Disney / Gomer Pyle in a weird way, all the way to the very not family friendly work of Derek Ford. Some of the stills have some saucy ladies and equally saucy men so not a book for kids. You will see so much of gross Robin Askwith's butt thumbing through this. Is it funny? Yeah, I mean ugly butts are funny.

Good fun if you like British movies or enjoy a goofy comedy or 2.

Engrossing! Gave me new insights

Demographic change is a sensitive subject all over the world.This book addresses this issue tactfully and provides interesting stories and examples
from different countries. Two important takeaways from this book are: 1. Politics affects fertility 2. Inclusiveness is key to slowing the rapid demographic change. This is a well written and well researched book. Even though it is intense in some places, it keeps your interest from starting to the end.

A recommended read

This is a very interesting book with novel ideas. Fertility and the choices in reproduction are influenced by a person’s religion, moral compass and as this book points out also politics. I think the author is right in her assessment that the 21st century will see some of the most radical demographic changes and the ideas to influence them are intriguing and validated with the research that is pointed to in the book. In the US, it is unbelievable that today there is still a disproportionate representation of women in both the U.S Congress and Senate and at the highest levels of all corporations, which leads to policies that put women at a huge disadvantage. The author talks about the impacts of these decisions on the W2 program in Wisconsin. A recommended read to help the readers that are interested analyzing the world around them and the policies that govern societies fair or not and the long range effects of those policies.

Rodrigues’ book is an eye-opening account of how politics is ...

Rodrigues’ book is an eye-opening account of how politics is intimately involved in demographic trends. Both academics and the general public interested in this topic will find many interesting examples, case studies and references to previously published work in this book.

As a non-academic, I found the comparison of Hispanic birth rates between New Mexico and Arizona and the reasons for it fascinating. Rodrigues’ discussion about how teenage pregnancy can be a rational choice was an angle I had never considered. Most importantly, the way politics influence women’s opportunities, female representation in government and other areas of power and the perception of marginalization seem to be little understood by those fearful of the changes ahead.

This insightful and concise investigation will be referenced by many students of sociology, politics and history.

Good book, but not the ultimite guide

I have read the biggest part of this book, and most of it satisfies my expectations. There are a lot of tips and stories about consulting cases in it. I helped me to understand what to expect for consulting cases and how to prepare them.

I am a bit disappointed about the quality of the book, if you compare it to the price. The book is not very thick, it is made of recycled paper and there are advertorials in it.

Otherwise the inside information is useful, so it is a good thing to buy this book.

a few mis-print and typos in the book

The book i received has some charts not shown up clearly. Some charts are misplaced in the book like the ones on page 51. The quality of the book (at least the print) doesn't look professional. The content is similar to other case interview books.
