At times the author repeats himself, however that is probably due to translation issues. I found the book informative and enjoyable ... now if i can only learn how to pronounce those Zen terms like a pro .....

I first became aware of this book at the author's website, then ordered it from Amazon. Is is a bit costly, but worth every penny. It is for those who are SERIOUS and committed to the path. It makes a very bold claim -- that you can achieve satori, enlightenment, and nirvana solely through following the book closely and using it as a manual along the way, thus eliminating the necessity of a personal Teacher/Master (that is, in fact, the "secret" referenced in the book's title). This is a very bold claim indeed. Whether or not this can actually be accomplished depends on the individual, I suppose. I can only say that I have never had a Teacher/Master (regrettably), and feel like I have made considerable progress on the path after following it as prescribed. It offers a great deal of insight that I have not seen in other Zen books, and I have read several over the years. In particular, it spends a lot of time detailing exactly how the normal "monkey mind" works and raises awareness as to how it can be tamed. This requires more than sitting alone, and the author goes into quite a lot of detail explaining various facets of advanced practice that must be incorporated into everyday awareness which, of course, is the ultimate goal of Zen. Zen is Life, and the book does a good job of showing how that is true, and how you can achieve the clarity necessary to achieve equanimity in everyday life. Highly recommended.

Pretty good but had some flaws

I'm a sucker for a hot bodyguard/damsel in distress book. This one had a lot of promise but fell short in a few ways. First, I never really got a good sense of Emily's personality. She was being stalked, OK. She was occasionally feisty. She fell for the mem, fine... But WHO she? Did she have hopes, dreams, quirks? Even by the end of the book she still seemed like a mystery to me. Second, I didn't buy the almost insta-love the men felt. It all just seemed too quick with not enough "getting to know you" scenes to fill out the story. Third, weird scenes like the men literally pulling guns IN Emily's hospital room when a nurse (who doesn't bat an eyelash at this) walks in but then 2 seconds later the same nurse freaks cuz the trio are in a menage. Huh?? Or when Emily, the heroes, and their friends are going over her case and while the heroes and Emily are practically grinding her on their lap. Like, WTF? I'm all for sexy time but as detailed and graphic as the threat to her was described, it never felt like Emily took the threat seriously. Fourth, weird asides in the story about Keeley's dad being killed (which was dealt with in about 2 paragraphs) and Emily's mom getting married near the end. Talk about out of the blue non sequiturs! Overall, my favorite character was Nate & Ty's sister, Kennedy. LOVED her. I felt like I understood her 10x more than Emily. I cannot wait to read her story--I think it will be a tear jerker for sure. So, in the end, this book was just OK but I would read this author again.

Passion, thrills, and chills

There is nothing I like more than a hot m�nage story and KL Donn has knocked this one out of the park. Emily has been running from her stalker for years. Every time she begins to relax he some how finds her and she's off and running. This poor girl has led a isolated life or years and it's beginning to take a toll on her. She's about ready to give up on life until she decides to seek help from a company that specializes in security. Dane and Cooper have always known that they will share a woman and when Emily walks into thier security firm they know she is the one. These two alphas are insanely hot and over the top. That Emily is one lucky girl. KL Donn does a incredible job of weaving this story with passion, intrigue, love, hot crazy bedroom action, thrills, and some scary intense scenes. Can Dane and Cooper protect Emily or will her stalker destroy her? I felt so many different emotions while reading this book. KL Donn will turn you on, excite you, scare you, make you cry big fat ugly tears, and give you the feels. Holy cow did I love this book and I loved seeing how much better her writing has become. I can't wait to see what she's going to make me feel while reading her next book

This series just gets better. Another emotion packed book

This series just gets better. Another emotion packed book! Emily is being stalked and has been on the run but he keeps finding her. She finally turns to Maxwell Securities for help. Dane and Cooper are assigned to protect her. The relationship that evolves with Emily, Dane and Cooper is hot! The stalker gets to Emily and her friend Kennedy and kidnaps them. Brutally traumatized is putting it mildly. I am so wrapped up in these characters, OMG!!! Rescued but so broken! Again burned through the pages of this book. Got to have more, on to book three.

We never really find out why Stewart decided to walk across Afghanistan only a few months after the Taliban were deposed, but what emerges from the last leg of his two-year journey across Asia is a lesson in good travel writing. By turns harrowing and meditative, Stewart's trek through Afghanistan in the footsteps of the 15th-century emperor Babur is edifying at every step, grounded by his knowledge of local history, politics and dialects. His prose is lean and unsentimental: whether pushing through chest-high snow in the mountains of Hazarajat or through villages still under de facto Taliban control, his descriptions offer a cool assessment of a landscape and a people eviscerated by war, forgotten by time and isolated by geography. The well-oiled apparatus of his writing mimics a dispassionate camera shutter in its precision. But if we are to accompany someone on such a highly personal quest, we want to know who that person is. Unfortunately, Stewart shares little emotional background; the writer's identity is discerned best by inference. Sometimes we get the sense he cares more for preserving history than for the people who live in it (and for whom historical knowledge would be luxury). But remembering Geraldo Rivera's gunslinging escapades, perhaps we could use less sap and more clarity about this troubled and fascinating country.(May)

Stewart, a resident of Scotland, has written for the New York Times Magazine and the London Review of Books, and he is a former fellow at Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government. In January 2002, having just spent 16 months walking across Iran, Pakistan, India, and Nepal, Stewart began a walk across Afghanistan from Herat to Kabul. Although the Taliban had been ousted several weeks earlier, Stewart was launching a journey through a devastated, unsettled, and unsafe landscape. The recounting of that journey makes for an engrossing, surprising, and often deeply moving portrait of the land and the peoples who inhabit it. Dont' miss this book!

This was a captivating, very unusual book. I read it a couple months ago, and am still thinking about it. I learned a lot about Afghanistan and Rory Stewart. The weaving of history with the inclusion of bits of the historical diary of Afghanistan's first Mughal emperor whose steps Stewart followed, added another level of fascination and depth. Stewart is not only an articulate, gifted writer, but also an unusually spirited person with an almost uncanny sense of survival. However, his need to push on at times, dangerously exhausted, in the face of life threatening danger presented a psychological dilemma that I grappled with on several occasions, trying to figure out this most unusual man. I was also moved by his relationship with the dog he adopted early in his journey.

His book has given me a window into the way things are in Afghanistan

Enjoying every step of the journey. Rory Stewart's perceptive acceptance of a foreign world, leaves me shaking my head in admiration. I'm reading the book slowly, a chapter every few days. The author's desire to understand and experience things around him, overtakes his sense of self preservation. The book gives us an insight into the journey of an incredibly kind, brave and intelligent human being. His book has given me a window into the way things are in Afghanistan, and showed me a little of the structured hierarchy within village life.

A Death Defying Adventure of the Highest Order

In 1972 I did the "Overland" trip from Sydney, Australia, to London including the Malay peninsular, Penang-Madras boat, India, Nepal, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran etc. Afghanistan was considered pretty dangerous then and we travelled in convoy with another couple, also in a VW Kombi, from ghastly Pakistan and the graveyard of British regiments, the Khyber Pass ( the Kabul pass is far more spectacular), south-west to Kandahar (vineyards on the hills) and north-west to Herat. What Mr Stewart did, to walk directly east from Herat to Kabul would have been considered insane then. It is a sad measure of the continued failure of the human race that it seems even more dangerous now. His book is tremendous. It is not meant to be anti-religion. But its brilliant insights into Islam are just as scary as looking into the pig-ignorance of the modern day Bible Belt in the US (where I now live) or the smug Vatican or the Israel-Palestine impasse, in general. As long as we have religion, there is no bright logical future for humans on earth.
