His failure to keep Dith Pran safe haunted Schaunberg for more than four years until, in October 1979, Dith Pran crossed the border to Thailand and to freedom. This is the harrowing account of the final days before the fall of Phnom Penh and of life under the Khmer Rouge, seen through the eyes of two men who shared a unique commitment to each other, to Cambodia, and to history.

Powerful and fascinating

There are two parts of this story, told in the film "The Killing Fields." The story of Dith Pran, who was working as a locally-hired photographer for NY Times reporter Sydney Schanberg at the time of the fall of Phnom Penh to Khmer Rouge troops in 1975, is of a man who manages to survive the horrors of a genocide which was directed by Cambodians toward Cambodians, and resulted in the death of (estimates vary) 1/4 to 1/3 of the country's population in less than four years. Schanberg's story of his own guilt and fear about what had happened to his friend is powerful and disturbing in its own way. This book is essentially the publication in book form of a long article in the New York Times Sunday magazine. You cannot help but be drawn into the story, which is clearly written and, while compassionate, manages to be dispassionate and matter-of-fact, in a way that good journalism can be.

Important journalism at the time of publication

"The Death and Life of Dith Pran" and Schanberg's reporting helped introduce America to the Cambodian Genocide. Because of that, this book is of historical and literary significance. However, being published in a newspaper just a year after the Cambodian Genocide ended, there was not much time for Schanberg or anyone else to do much research into the matter. As such, this book is mostly about Schanberg's despondency after losing his friend Dith Pran for four years. The book also covers what happened to Pran during the Genocide, albeit briefly and without much detail. The book is less than 80 pages.

Since being published, numerous memoirs and studies about the Cambodian Genocide have replaced the importance of "The Death and Life of Dith Pran." There is a wealth of new scholarly information, journalism, and biography from which readers can pull information from besides this book. Nevertheless, "The Death and Life of Dith Pran" was important from a cultural perspective.

Actually the magazine piece--well written and compelling account

I found this book (a used copy) when looking for writings based in the Cambodia/Vietnam area--prior to a planned trip to the region. Honest telling by Schanberg of his relationship with Pran--the good aspects as well as the undue influence imposed on Pran when the Americans were pulling out.

Reading for the third time!

Frank Peretti 's books are all good, but my favorites are 'This Present Darkness' and 'Piercing the Darkness.' This book is well written, and a real page-turner. It gives shape and form to the spiritual warfare that we face daily. Gives you a glimpse behind the physical world to reveal who the real enemy is. I highly recommend it for those interested in spiritual issues And to those looking for a really good mystery and interesting story.

Suffers from Sequel Syndrome

Piercing the Darkness is the follow-up novel to This Present Darkness, both of which I devoured as a teenager. Going back and re-reading the book as an adult once more reminds me of what a good writer Peretti is. He knows how to spin a tale that doesn't just carry you along, it grabs you by the scruff of your neck and drags you through page after page until you breathlessly sit at the end of the book panting, "Let's do that again!"

That being said, this book does suffer from sequel syndrome: it's bigger, more clunky and unwieldly than the first. Peretti himself admits in his introductory note, that in retrospect he'd bitten off more than he could chew. Considering the book's origins in the 1990's and the paucity of very good Christian thriller fiction at the time, he can be forgiven for that. Piercing the Darkness is still a fun ride, though I am even less pleased with some of his depictions of angel-human interactions than in This Present Darkness. It often feels as if the humans are merely the angels' means to an end, not that they are humans' ministers and protectors(as is taught in the Bible -- see Heb 1:14). Again, this is a novel, not a work of theology, but it will inform the less astute reader and has the potential of putting some not-exactly-biblical ideas concerning angels, demons and spiritual warfare in the less careful mind. With that in mind, the reader should sift all angelology and demonology through a scriptural lens, while enjoying Peretti's inventiveness and Sally Roe's journey.

It is nice to see the transformed Marshall Hogan go at it for the Lord. Kate's bigger role is also enjoyable, though she seems too vastly transformed from the newspaper widow in the first book. Peretti's depiction of Heaven's joy at the salvation of a soul is a moving scene. I kind of miss Hank and Mary Busche and I feel the other characters (with the exception of Sally) are less compelling than those in the first novel. Even the angels and demons feel more one-dimensional, though almost all the angels were featured in the first novel, too. These are all classic symptoms of sequel syndrome, so we'll accept them, as well as the fact that in the grand scheme of novel-making this is a worthy entry overall. (Though it was good Peretti abandoned these guys in his subsequent novels; I don't think a third installment would have worked at all.)

Spiritual warfare with a precedent setting court case threatening religious freedom in Anytown, USA. This is a sequel. I liked the first one better. Perhaps I expected more from the Angels who were constantly complaining about lack of "prayer cover". Their continuous timidity over breaching demonic turf was unsettling. I believe in the power and necessity of prayer however I do not believe that legions of heavenly hosts can be made impotent by the lack of human petitions to the Almighty. Still it was a good story and worth a positive rating. This book had plenty of victims but lacked a bonafide hero. Caution, reading this book make make you feel like...somebody's watching you.

About the Author

Arnold Robbins, an Atlanta native, is a professional programmer and technical author. He has worked with Unix systems since 1980, when he was introduced to a PDP-11 running a version of Sixth Edition Unix. He has been a heavy AWK user since 1987, when he became involved with gawk, the GNU project's version of AWK. As a member of the POSIX 1003.2 balloting group, he helped shape the POSIX standard for AWK. He is currently the maintainer of gawk and its documentation. He is also coauthor of the sixth edition of O'Reilly's Learning the vi Editor. Since late 1997, he and his family have been living happily in Israel.

In my opinion, the GDB quick reference that you can download for free is more useful. To go over the basics, this book is OK, but for daily lookup purposes, the quick reference is more useful.

I purchased this book as a "filler" to reach over $25 for free shipping. I'm a software engineer and do use GDB frequently.

Well worth the $10, or even more

I work on a very large C codebase, and 99% of our debugging is done in GDB.

Most of the time, singlestepping through every. single. line. would be prohibitively exhausting. Unlike the downloadable GDB refcard, this pocket reference contains enough info on conditional breakpoints and command sequences (among other GDB treasures) to _greatly_ reduce the amount of time it takes to locate the source of a problem among data structures that are simply too big (and sometimes sparsely populated) to step through one at a time.

I'm a big fan of the O'Reilly "Pocket Reference" series, and this one is definitely worth the price.

Good concepts, outdated libraries

The book has all of the concepts needed to understand what the computer is doing, and all of the components you need for a successful video game, both on the conceptual sense and implementation sense. The problem with trying to use this book now is that you need a legacy system to utilize the graphical library. The new version of the library is more confusing than the books, and the old library was designed for Windows XP and earlier.

I would suggest modern books if you want to learn specific libraries that will help you, but this book will help if you need or want more conceptual understanding.

Great all-in-one intro to game programming

I was a Computer Science major in college, and wanted to get into game programming. Never did it before, and had a lot of difficulty just being able to create a programming environment so that I could do basic C graphics programming.

Well, I found this book, and wrote a complete version of Tetris from scratch, and then a complete version of Pac-Man, which includes all the original ghost algorithm logic. I've also written numerous other graphics programs and games (Arkanoid, asteroids, etc) using it and all the tools included with the book.

It is very easy to read and follow. Great examples. All the sample code works. It gives you all the basic skills to program anything to do with 2D graphics. The Allegro toolset is quite powerful.

Anyway, I highly recommend it as a novice.

On the verge of being outdated

There's a new version of Allegro coming out (5.x series already in Beta) that's going to make this book somewhat obsolete.

The author's forums are okay. There is a good section on how to get your IDE and compiler setup, but because the book is old it doesn't cover the latest tools or operating systems.

If you still want to buy then I'd recommend getting the book used and downloading the free tools yourself.

It's not really the book's fault that it is outdated, though, so for what it is - it's a good book. Check out the author's other (newer) listings first.

This book is a collection of anecdotal "re caps" of the accidental discoveries that led to revolutionary scientific develop ment, including Edward Jenner's creation of the smallpox vaccine and Newton's gravity theory. Roberts tells us that Jen ner made the fortuitous connection be tween cowpox and smallpox by investi gating the claim of a milkmaid who avoided smallpox illness in the barnyard. Likewise, a shrewd Newton developed gravitational theory while observing the fall of the fa mous apple. It's clear that Roberts (chemis try, Univ. of Texas) feels most engaged and comfortable in the fields of chemistry and biology, for these sections are the largest and the most informative and concisely written. Elsewhere, the book suffers from a choppy and dry presentation. Recom mended for larger subject collections only.

So good I want to read it again right now!

This book is a really fun read for the science enthusiast. The author, a researcher in organic chemistry, emphasizes the role played by chance in scientific discovery, "serendipity" as he titles the book, and as such he argues for a particular philosophy of science. But serendipity does not imply pure dumb luck, as the author explains, but rather "sagacity" is an important ingredient; these great scientists and inventors had the perspicuity and imagination to recognize the importance of their chance discoveries--i.e. that muck at the bottom of the flask had some truly intriguing properties!

The book is structured as a series of articles on serendipitous discoveries from the time of Archimedes right up into the late twentieth century. Sometimes romance and scientific legend are employed, especially in the early half of the book, in order to entertain and support the thesis of serendipity, but I think little is lost by such speculation. What I found most interesting about the book is that organic and industrial chemistry are emphasized in the content, probably owing to the author's background, rather than the usual more glamorous popular science fare of physics and medicine. As a result, much of the information is new to the more jaded science reader. I personally had never read the story of Joseph Priestly, who discovered of oxygen, the basic reactions of photosynthesis, and so many other marvelous discoveries, until I read this book! I find it amazing that Priestly receives nary a mention in the standard college science course, while a media clown like Einstein is instantly recognizable to the general public, most of whom could not even describe to you what he supposedly "discovered".

Contained herein are the stories of the discoveries of the various elements, iodine, the noble gases, safety glass, velcro, teflon and many other amazing products of human technology. The book is richly decorated, filled with illustrations, photographs, and cartoons. Part of what enticed me to read the book was a nice three dimensional structural formula of vitamin B12, the largest natural molecule ever synthesized de novo. There is something here for everone.

On the down side, I think perhaps the author brought in too much organic chemistry, some of it quite technical, for readers who have not taken organic chemistry before. Maybe trained scientists are the target audience, however, and his enthusiasm for his own field is understandable. And my own personal experiences with organic have lead me to believe that much of it is groping in the dark, so maybe the author's trade is no coincidence.

What have you seen lately?

This is a fun book filled with vignettes about the discovery of something that we take for granted today. Serendipity is a gift for finding something good by accident, luck, or good fortune. Velcro�, penicillin, X-rays, dynamite, streaking, yes streaking, all have their roots in serendipity.
Archimedes was the first streaker. He calculated a way to measure the actual amount of gold used in a crown that the king had commissioned. King Hiero had provided the gold, but did not trust the goldsmith. Archimedes had already written mathematical formulas for finding the volume of a sphere and cylinder, but this was an irregular solid object. He was in the public baths in Syracuse when it dawned on him that the volume of an object would displace an equal volume of water. He ran from the bathhouse yelling, "Eureka, I've got it!" He simply forgot to put his clothes back on. The king was right to be suspicious, by the way.
Had it not been for his intelligence, sound judgement, and wisdom he would not be credited with the discovery. This is the theme throughout the book. "Accidents become discoveries because of the sagacity of the person who encountered the accident."
For students or trivia champions knowing the background, especially the accidental and humorous beginnings of something, makes remembering who discovered what and why easier. The bonus is that you get a few good chuckles too. Five stars for the discoverers.

An excellent book on the breakthroughs in science which have in some way been fuelled by chance. Inspiration came to Archimedes while sitting in the bath and to Isaac Newton under an apple tree, as we all know; but Roberts offers other less well-known yet fascinating tales of scientific discovery. I was intrigued to read that Bill Gates invented the left-handed mouse while "working on something else" - according to the Microsoft guru himself.

About the Author
Sandra Cabot is the medical and executive director of the Australian National Health Advisory Service. She graduated with honors in medicine and surgery from the University of Adelaide in South Australia in 1975. As part of her extracurricular medical training, she studied herbal medicine and nutritional medicine. Dr. Cabot began her medical career in 1980 as an obstetrician-gynecologist and practiced in Sydney Australia. During the mid 1980s she spent considerable time working as a volunteer doctor at the Leyman hospital, which was the largest missionary hospital in India. Her first book, titled Women's Health, was an authoritative holistic health guide. Subsequently she wrote several more groundbreaking books including The Liver Cleansing Diet, which has sold well over two million copies worldwide. She has written twenty-two other health titles.

Lifechanging

All doctors who diagnose patients with fatty liver disease should be required to give them this book at the same time. I had never heard of this disease and was totally in the dark about it...I left the doctor's office with many questions and few answers. This book was a lifesaver. It explains the seriousness of the disease, but also recommends lifestyle changes, offers recipes and solutions to turn it around. Well worth every penny.

Seemed to be the only resource out there for fatty liver disease...

I bought this book after my doctor told me that I have some fat on my liver following an ultrasound and an MRI scan. I have been having mysterious symptoms for about 2 years now that they haven't been able to explain, including bilary colic, inflamation of the liver, malabsorption of vitamins, low t, acne rosacea, etc. While my Doctor has told me these symptoms are not related to each other -- Dr. Calbot's book seems to draw a very clear picture of how all of these things work together -- and it looks like she is saying that they are all caused by the same thing, fatty liver.

I was thankful to finally find a decent resource on Fatty Liver, with some clear steps on what to do to reverse it. I had already suspected that a diet of low/no sugar, and low fat would help me lose weight and reverse the effects. Seems like now that I have lost about 10% of my body weight, the pain is receding, and I'm feeling better. I'm hopeful that I'll continue to improve, and I'll be able to stay on this diet for life.

I just wish that Dr. Calbot's book would have been presented in a more scholarly manner, because it seems to be heavily weighted with anecdotes and stories from her patients -- but not much scientific data. I'd definitely like to see more from her on this subject, including some of her clinical trials/tests, etc... I'd like to know more on how specifically a fatty liver can be caused to pump out toxic bile and sludge that a normal liver doesn't create.

When I presented the book to my GI Doctor, he made it sound like Calbot is kind of a quack and not mainstream at all. His only advice was to "not drink alcohol", and "lose weight gradually" -- but refused to give specific recommendations on herbal supplements or specific remedies that could speed up recovery. I was thankful to find a few good recommendations on these topics in Calbot's book!

A Gift of great Importance.

To all who need this help and to all who need this help and don't even know it. I have been through the ringer in my life and have needed specified help for specified medical problems. The book "Fatty Liver: You Can Reverse It" is an amazing book that can save innumerable lives. Dr. Sandra Cabot has, in my opinion written a book that everyone forty or older should have and should read, and then some. I could see millions of North Americans and tens of millions, if not, hundreds of millions worldwide who could benefit immensely from this medical advice that involves diet. Millions of lives could be saved and millions more could lead better lives. Why isn't this common knowledge! Why didn't my doctor tell me of this or why hasn't my doctor told me of this so many many years ago. After reading this book and the brutally logical and very easy to understand physiological and biological accountings of how so many of us, are in our lives, with poor or potentially fatal organ functions, primarily the liver, and how we so damaged ourselves, I finally felt I knew my physiology. Dr. Sandra Cabot's book explains this brilliantly as she then goes on to educate us with the most basic and nutritious and common sense diet recovery, in my opinion, ever written in history. To put it succinctly, my liver got better, I lost weight, I lost my insatiable appetite, I gained a vast amount of new physical energy and I felt much better psychologically. I became healthier and had more normal readings on my blood tests, finally! After all these years! There are books and there are books. This book can save and extend your life, not a word of an un-truth, I kid you not, and every other cliche. Everyone should know this information, everyone! Thanks, Dr. Sandra Cabot.
