This was an excellent review manual for the PE exam. I used only the review book along with the practice problem and quick reference companion to study for the test, and passed the exam on the first try. I also use this as a great reference manual at work as well.

Apparently they lowered the price by $100 since I wasted $225 on this book

Apparently they lowered the price by $100 since I wasted $225 on this book, they're probably going to be coming out with a new edition with a couple of numbers changed in the problems and a different cover so they can continue to gouge professionals. There are a lot of problems in this book and if you can solve them you'll probably do well on the PE. On the other hand, you'll do even better if you just get the (far less expensive) NCEES sample exam as those questions are far more similar to what you will actually see on the PE exam. FYI, I passed the chemical PE but didn't use this book at all. I just used the sample exam. I did however find the reference manual that accompanies this book to be pretty useful on the exam. What would make this book (and the reference manual) better would be more kinetics questions. Those account for a good percentage (maybe 6-10 problems out of 80) of questions you'll see on the test and yet you will hardly find anything in either book about those questions. Instead you find hundreds of useless pages covering subjects that you won't find on the exam. Why is that? Probably because these books are copy paste jobs from the other disciplines. The ChemE books are probably 80% the same as the MechE books with some environmental material inexplicably copied in probably from the Civil Engineering series.

Gives you more material to work with beyond the one practice test you can get from NCEES. The practice problems in this volume tend to be significantly harder than those in the test. I guess this is a good thing, since it over-prepares you.

This well written fantasy continues.

The story takes place 6 years after The Wizard of Bright Isle. This second book is more an exciting fantasy adventure than romance. This is expected as the villain escaped and wreck havoc on the kingdom. But the love between Kieran and Eduoard is always there even if the boys have not acknowledged their love for each other. They are inseparable as Kieran serves as Eduoard's bodyguard. Their closeness is ofcourse frowned upon even by well meaning friends/caretakers. They do take the next step in their relationship towards the end of the book, which I thought the writer handles well with some comical moments from well wishers. The writing is just as engaging and the magical elements are entertaining and refreshing. The secondary characters take up important roles in the development of the story. I have no problem with that as the pace is fast and most of these secondary characters are interesting in their own rights. As I have said there is nothing new in the idea but this writer's version is fresh, her magical ideas original. Certain parts like Kieran's action to gain trust from his wizard colleagues and the way the villain is ultimately captured especially stand out and shows the writer's creativity. And for just close to 3 bucks, this is money so well spent for an entertaining day.

Leaves me willing to finish the series..

Just finised reading the second book of this triolgy. It's not only about the two main characters but other side action getting fair play. The innocence of fourteen year olds' awkwardness in the first book continues in early young adulthood with the two main actors. Condemnation and eventually cautious acceptance by associates of this male pair gives the story a tenderness. Although, no explicit sex scenes, the affection and closeness between the king and his servant(companion, bodygaurd, wizard, lover) is precious. I'm looking forward to the conclusion of this story by this talented writer.

The Story of Sensemaking

This review is different than most, because rather than dissecting the book, I will provide a few overall ideas about the concept of Sensemaking and why it is worth your consideration. This is an academic and theoretical book, but the more casual reader should not miss out on its core principles. For an academic treatment of Sensemaking, see pages 57-64 of my dissertation which is available on my website.

Sensemaking is a process that applies to both individuals and groups who are faced with new information that is inconsistent with their prior beliefs. In some cases, it can be the lack of expected information that triggers the Sensemaking process. Weick's work is based in part on Festinger's theory of cognitive dissonance, which holds that people are uncomfortable with inconsistent beliefs and are driven resolve the dissonance it creates.

Consequently, Sensemaking posits that people will resolve their cognitive dissonance through plausible (but not necessarily accurate) narratives, which then become entrenched over time and resistant to change. This explains how, for example, religious groups can have such stringent beliefs, how political parties can be confident in their diametrically opposed positions, how organizations can develop very different cultures, and how individuals can develop very different interpretations for the same events.

Underlying assumptions in Sensemaking:

1) The world is complex and ambiguous
2) Available information is massive and contradictory
3) Individuals have limited ability to process information
4) Individuals are uncomfortable with unresolved ambiguity or contradictory information (cognitive dissonance)
5) Most actions, beliefs, and cognitions are socially influenced

The Sensemaking process:

1) Sensemaking starts with an event or act (or sometimes the lack of an expected event).

2) Individuals construct meaning for the event or act (interpret it) by selecting only certain cues from their past experience based on their existing beliefs and biases. Disconfirming cues are often not observed at all, deemphasized, or ignored.

3) Commitment forms around the interpretation to bind the interpretation to future action. When publicly communicated, commitment is especially strong.

4) Individuals are motivated to justify their commitments, so they initiate future actions and continually refine their interpretation of the original event so that their commitment to a course of action is deemed appropriate.

5) These new actions produce "evidence" that validates the interpretation and are used to increase decision confidence.

6) Over time, the ambiguous nature of the original event or act is forgotten and other possible "right answers" are never developed. More importantly, the commitment that was made to a specific decision or course of action increasingly becomes seen as the only rational, logical, and appropriate outcome.

Great details, solid descriptions

While I have a good bit of mechanical and restoration experience, I'm currently rebuilding a 1962 Jaguar EType roadster, and needed a detailed guide for measuring cam lifts, adjusting timing chains, etc. This book isn't a substitute for hands-on experience, but definitely helps fill in some gaps you might have, especially regarding measurement and tuning specifics. I found the tools section surprisingly helpful too. The attention to detail is very high, and it's written in a very approachable, digestible way.

Note that it's pretty much engine only. If you're looking for info to rebuild the whole powertrain, you'll have to turn to other books/resources.
