The Lost City of the Monkey God: A True Story, by Douglas Preston

The #1 New York Times and #1 Wall Street Journal bestseller! A five-hundred-year-old legend. An ancient curse. A stunning medical mystery. And a pioneering journey into the unknown heart of the world's densest jungle.

Since the days of conquistador Hernn Corts, rumors have circulated about a lost city of immense wealth hidden somewhere in the Honduran interior, called the White City or the Lost City of the Monkey God. Indigenous tribes speak of ancestors who fled there to escape the Spanish invaders, and they warn that anyone who enters this sacred city will fall ill and die. In 1940, swashbuckling journalist Theodore Morde returned from the rainforest with hundreds of artifacts and an electrifying story of having found the Lost City of the Monkey God-but then committed suicide without revealing its location.

Three quarters of a century later, bestselling author Doug Preston joined a team of scientists on a groundbreaking new quest. In 2012 he climbed aboard a rickety, single-engine plane carrying the machine that would change everything: lidar, a highly advanced, classified technology that could map the terrain under the densest rainforest canopy. In an unexplored valley ringed by steep mountains, that flight revealed the unmistakable image of a sprawling metropolis, tantalizing evidence of not just an undiscovered city but an enigmatic, lost civilization.

Venturing into this raw, treacherous, but breathtakingly beautiful wilderness to confirm the discovery, Preston and the team battled torrential rains, quickmud, disease-carrying insects, jaguars, and deadly snakes. But it wasn't until they returned that tragedy struck: Preston and others found they had contracted in the ruins a horrifying, sometimes lethal-and incurable-disease.

Suspenseful and shocking, filled with colorful history, hair-raising adventure, and dramatic twists of fortune, THE LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD is the absolutely true, eyewitness account of one of the great discoveries of the twenty-first century.

Amazon.com Review
An Amazon Best Book of January 2017: In 2012, author Douglas Preston joined a team of explorers searching for Ciudad Blanca (“The White City”), a legendary ruin hidden in the dense jungle of eastern Honduras. To this point the city – also known as “the Lost City of the Monkey God” - was literally a legend; while various hucksters and hoaxers had claimed to have discovered the abandoned metropolis, no credible evidence had ever been presented, and its very existence remained shrouded in doubt. In addition to the objective hazards of tropical disease, wild boars, and the deadly fer-de-lance viper, locals stoked the mystique, describing various curses awaiting would-be discoverers. Don’t pick the flowers, or you’ll die.

But this team had an advantage that previous searchers had lacked: LIDAR, an advanced laser-imaging technology able to penetrate the dense jungle canopy – just enough – and return detailed elevation profiles from which subtle, man-made anomalies could be identified. Almost immediately, two major sites emerged, their scale and architecture indicating a civilization to rival another local, more famous power, the Maya.

The announcement had consequences. The fledgling Honduran government, having gained power through a military coup, sought to use the discovery to bolster its status with the population, while the academic community ripped the expedition with accusations of Indiana Jones-style exploitation and shoddy scientific methods, cries which could be uncharitably interpreted as sour grapes. Encroaching deforestation and the prospect of looters created urgency to conduct a ground survey, and the team ventured into the wilderness and all the hazards that awaited, including an unexpected and insidious danger that cursed the team well beyond their return home.

The author of over 30 books, including number of bestselling thrillers co-written with Lincoln Child, Preston knows pace, and he packs several narratives into a taut 300 pages. Indiana Jones criticism aside, the story of the discovery and exploration of the ruin is solid adventure writing, and he walks a fine line in dealing with the archaeology community’s response, reporting on the bases for their criticism where they chose to provide it. And by invoking Jared Diamond’s Guns, Germs, and Steel, Preston speculates on the mysterious, sudden demise of the White City and its inhabitants, drawing ominous parallels between their fate and possibly our own. Lost City is a tale that manages to be both fun and harrowing, a vicarious thrill worthy of a place on the shelf next to David Grann’s The Lost City of Z. --Jon Foro, The Amazon Book Review

Review
"Preston builds a compelling case for the scientific significance of what the expedition unearthed....The year may still be young, but I would wager a small fortune that Douglas Preston has already written the best snake-decapitation scene of 2017....The book's most affecting moments [center] on the otherworldly nature of the jungle itself....Memoirs of jungle adventures too often devolve into lurid catalogs of hardships [but] Preston proves too thoughtful an observer and too skilled a storyteller to settle for churning out danger porn. He has instead created something nuanced and sublime: a warm and geeky paean to the revelatory power of archaeology....Few other writers possess such heartfelt appreciation for the ways in which artifacts can yield the stories of who we are."―The New York Times Book Review

"A well-documented and engaging read...The author's narrative is rife with jungle derring-do and the myriad dangers of the chase."―USA Today

"Deadly snakes, flesh-eating parasites, and some of the most forbidding jungle terrain on earth were not enough to deter Douglas Preston from a great story."―The Boston Globe

"Breezy, colloquial and sometimes very funny...A very entertaining book."―The Wall Street Journal

"This modern-day archeological adventure and medical mystery reads as rapidly as a well-paced novel, but is a heart-pounding true story."―Shelf Awareness, Starred Review

"A captivating real-life adventure tale... Preston deftly explains the science behind this work and makes it exciting."―Science News

"Be prepared to turn the pages furiously as the heart of every adventurer is opened wide by the thrilling journey outlined in THE LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD."―The Bookreporter

"Packed with the power of realism and history unfolding."―The Star Ledger

"Admirers of David Grann's The Lost City of Z will find their thirst for armchair jungle adventuring quenched here... Irresistibly gripping."―Publishers Weekly, starred review

"This nonfiction thriller about plunging into the interior of the Honduran jungle is actually true and a perfect read for armchair travelers or would-be adventurers who bemoan the fact that there's nothing left to discover...Douglas Preston's true-life tale includes everything from the latest technology to ancient curses to scientific backbiting and a mysterious illness that came out of the jungle and is headed your way."―The Huffington Post

"Let author Douglas Preston give testimony to the old adage: Truth is stranger than fiction...The Lost City of the Monkey God is more than just an adventure story. It examines such modern issues as the ethics of archeological expeditions, man's destruction of the rainforest and the incessant creep of technology and its effects on indigenous peoples. Readers will find themselves both shocked and captivated by this account of mysteries old and new."―Bookpage

"The Lost City of the Monkey God is a superior example of narrative nonfiction, an exciting, immersive tale of modern science and ancient mythology. Preston captures the complexity of his subject without bogging down in the details, presenting scenes with clarity, purposefulness and wit. It's a great story for a snowy day, an action-packed journey into a hot zone of scientific intrigue."―The Portland Press Herald

"A story that moves from thrilling to sobering, fascinating to downright scary--trademark Preston, in other words, and another winner."―Kirkus, starred review

"Replete with informative archaeology lessons and colorful anecdotes about the challenges Elkins' crew faced during the expedition, including torrential rains and encounters with deadly snakes, Preston's uncommon travelogue is as captivating as any of his more fanciful fictional thrillers."―Booklist

"Best-selling journalist and thriller author Douglas Preston stars in his own true-story page-turner about the discovery of a lost city deep in the Honduran jungle...giving readers an Indiana Jones style adventure that's history, not Hollywood."―Virtuoso Life

"For anyone who dreams of lost times and places--and who doesn't?--this is the book. Revelatory, chilling, creepy, and alive with deadly snakes and insects bearing incurable disease, it's high adventure at its best, and all true."―Erik Larson, New York Times bestselling author of Dead Wake and The Devil in the White City

"What reader could resist a new book by Douglas Preston called THE LOST CITY OF THE MONKEY GOD? Not this reader. Preston's book offers rewards for both the mystery fan and the nonfiction aficionado. THE LOST CITY is addictive-fast-paced and riveting, but it's also important. We mustn't repeat the cataclysmic mistakes of the past. Ironically-as THE LOST CITY illustrates-that's exactly what our short-sighted civilization is doing right now."―James Patterson

"If you're going to explore a lost city-in this case one that vultures, poisonous snakes, sand flies, and mudholes have protected for 500 years-you really only want to do it with Douglas Preston. A tale of bravado, chicanery, and impossible dreams, arresting at every turn, no less so in its unexpected, pulse-racing coda."―Stacy Schiff, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Witches: Salem, 1692, and Cleopatra: A Life

"Douglas Preston, at great risk to his own life, has produced a thrilling and powerful adventure story. Not only does he leave the reader fitfully turning the pages, he sheds an important light on what the Americas looked like before the arrival of Christopher Columbus and on the fragility of our own civilization."―David Grann, New York Times bestselling author of The Lost City of Z

"Douglas Preston is one of the most adventurous figures in American letters today. Inured to personal danger, braving venomous snakes and lethal pathogens, he somehow gets it all--the science, the history, the intrigues, the obsessive characters, the electric moment of discovery, and the haunted cries of a once-powerful civilization. Preston's marvelous story is made all the more potent by the astonishing fact that, from beginning to end, it happens to be true."―Hampton Sides, New York Times bestselling author of In the Kingdom of Ice

"A great true adventure, filled with danger, close calls, better-than-Hollywood characters, and a lost world that reaches through time and into everyone's future. One of the best nonfiction books I've read."―Robert Kurson, New York Times bestselling author of Shadow Divers and Pirate Hunters

"The Lost City of the Monkey God is a throwback to the golden age of adventure archaeology, the thrilling true story of a group of explorers penetrating one of the toughest jungles on earth in search of a lost city...and finding it. Preston is a terrific writer of both non-fiction books and bestselling novels, and makes you feel the dark heart of this lost Honduran wilderness."―John Sandford, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and author of the #1 New York Times bestselling Prey series of novels

"One of the best reads so far this year."―The Sacramento Bee

And The Reviews Keep Pouring In......
By Scott E. High
This is NOT a book authored by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child that continues the adventures of Special Agent A. Pendergast and his unique circle of friends and assorted characters. However this is an intriguing and very interesting documentary written by Douglas Preston that takes you inside the planning and execution of a continual search for a mythical lost city (and/or civilization) that until 2015 remained nothing more than rumor and myth(s). It is NOT an "Indiana Jones" novel and is all the more compelling for avoiding that type of embellishment and drama. You won't find a photograph of Harrison Ford inside the dust jacket but you will see a grinning shot of Douglas Preston bearing an uncanny resemblance to the (deceased) actor Edward Herrmann.

Don't underestimate what is encountered and accomplished in this journey, several real-life challenges arise and have to be effectively and efficiently dealt with. This undiscovered Honduran city/civilization has remained hidden for hundreds of years for several good reasons. A combination of legends and myths, some completely false and yet others bearing an element of truth, have circulated about this area, both intriguing and cautioning researchers and potential explorers. "Ground breaking" technology (pun intended) becomes available that can help pinpoint the potential discovery of this area, but nothing beats 'boots on the ground' to prove and establish its existence.

If you order this book, don't expect a fast-moving adventure tale that uses various hooks and literary schemes to reel you in. Instead expect a logical and relatively full picture of how research is conducted, expeditions planned, and the real-life difficulties and dangers encountered. Douglas Preston presents a well-documented journey, including maps and photographs, of the main characters and the steps taken to both justify and undertake this complicated and difficult exploration. Mr. Preston's writing makes it easy to imagine yourself as part of this exploratory party -- and raises the question of "is it really worth it"? For as physics class taught us in high school "every action results in an opposite and equal reaction". Some of the reactions in this story are extremely fearful -- to say the least. This particular exploration gives new meaning to the phrase "the gift that keeps on giving". Sometimes it might be better to let 'sleeping dogs lie'.

Read it and enjoy it for what it is. The "Comments" sections are loaded with arguments and accusations concerning several aspects of the story, with occasional heated discussions breaking out. However, reading them and trying to interpret who is (at least) partially correct and/or accurate is sort of like watching confirmed liberals and conservatives hurling 'slings and arrows' at each other while failing to agree on anything. Great book though!

The Lost City of the Mo.key God
By Ed Seymour
I am an adament reader of 'll Preston and Child's books. So seeing a book by just Doug Preston interested me. It was not what I expected, since it was a true documentary book but I found it extremely insiteful, knowledgeable and informative of its subjects - what it takes to launch an expedition, the natives, decrease and determination, all against the background of a country I never thought about -- Honduras. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

Of Lost Cities, professional jealousy...and the bugs.
By Mark Newell PhD
Douglas Preston has chronicled what many an archaeologist would consider the greatest of adventures, the discovery of a long lost but fabled City deep in the central American jungle. Yes, such places are still to be found. Preston is not an archaeologist, National Geographic was involved, the location may well be compromised and attacked by looters - and so on - the archaeological purists found these and other reasons to attack the entire project and the book. And the entire reason for doing so in reality was that they were not involved. The jealousy factor indicates what a fantastic project this was. The 'white city' or the 'city of the monkey god' was rumored for centuries, but it took modern day LIDAR to reveal its true location and set the scene for an epic trek into the deepest reaches of the untouched Honduran jungle. Preston, a journalist, tells an engaging story of the history of the legend, of the charlatans who first searched for it (or pretended to) and how technology finally peeled back the jungle canopy to reveal the existence of a massive city complex in a hidden valley. He then takes the reader into the jungle with the first exploration team. Trust me, you'd rather read about it in your armchair than actually be there (something I tell all my volunteers). The deadliest snakes in the southern hemisphere, the jaguars, the incessant howler monkeys, the never ending rain - and the bugs. I tell myself I would shrug it all off just to have been there when Preston and the expedition leaders (yes there were archaeologists) found the city and within it a cache of mysteriously sacrificed artifacts. This story has everything, a great read, a great new project for Honduras - and a great microscopic villain that will make your flesh crawl. Literally.

Bread, Wine, and Money: The Windows of the Trades at Chartres Cathedral, by Jane Welch Williams

At Chartres Cathedral, for the first time in medieval art, the lowest register of stained-glass windows depicts working artisans and merchants instead of noble and clerical donors. Jane Welch Williams challenges the prevailing view that pious town tradesmen donated these windows. In Bread, Wine, and Money, she uncovers a deep antagonism between the trades and the cathedral clergy in Chartres; the windows, she argues, portray not town tradesmen but trusted individuals that the fearful clergy had taken into the cloister as their own serfs.

Williams weaves a tight net of historical circumstances, iconographic traditions, exegetical implications, political motivations, and liturgical functions to explain the imagery in the windows of the trades. Her account of changing social relationships in thirteenth-century Chartres focuses on the bakers, tavern keepers, and money changers whose bread, wine, and money were used as means of exchange, tithing, and offering throughout medieval society. Drawing on a wide variety of original documents and scholarly work, this book makes important new contributions to our knowledge of one of the great monuments of Western culture.

FOR USE IN SCHOOLS AND LIBRARIES ONLY. In 1942, Hannelore Wolff made a difficult decision, one that changed her life forever. This is the story of her journey through eight concentration camps, one of which is where she met her future husband.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up–In a clear, objective narrative, Hillman (called by her German name, Hannelore, in the book) describes her life from April 1942, as a student at a private school in Berlin, until the German surrender in April 1945 that freed her from a detention camp. After her father's death, she left school and was deported with her mother and brothers to Poland. During her three years of captivity she was moved to several labor and concentration camps. Her inclusion on Oskar Schindler's list led, finally, to her deportation to the Brnnlitz camp in Czechoslovakia, where Jewish prisoners were treated humanely. At the fourth detention camp–Budzyn–Hannelore met the man who would become her husband. Her growing love and concern for him; her strong instinct for survival; and her endurance in the face of deprivation, inhumane conditions, and near-starvation provide considerable inspiration. Several photos of family members are included, along with a map that clearly indicates the locations of the camps in which Hannelore was held prisoner. While strong language, descriptions of brutality, a rape scene, and sexual innuendos suggest an audience of mature teens, this readable account of loss and survival during Hitler's Holocaust belongs in most collections.–Susan Scheps, Shaker Heights Public Library, OH

From Booklist
*Starred Review* Gr. 8-11. There are many YA Holocaust memoirs, but few of them deal with a teenager's survival in the concentration camps. That makes Hillman's affecting account particulalry noteworthy. In 1942 Berlin, Hannelore, 16, bravely volunteers to be deported with her mother and two younger brothers to Poland. Of course, they are soon separated, and during the next three years Hannelore is moved through eight concentration camps. In clipped, first-person narrative, she remembers the worst: crammed cattle cars; backbreaking work from stone quarries to salt mines; beatings; hunger; her own rape; the smell of children's bodies in the crematoria. She tells it as she endured it, quietly relaying the facts without sensationalism or sentimentality. She remembers making friends, one of whom is beaten to death because of a relationship with a German soldier. Hannelore herself falls in love with a young prisoner, Dick. At the end of the book is a photo of the lovers reunited and married; no one else in the family photos survived. The author never fully explains how she and Dick get onto Schindler's list, which saves them from Auschwitz (an explanatory note about the list would have been helpful), but the arbitrariness of the list was as true to the Holocaust survival experience as the loss. Review
A man by the name of Oskar Schindler is taking eleven hundred Jews out of here. If only we could go with them." Thus appears one glimmer of hope in Hannelore Wolff's harrowing odyssey through eight labor and concentration camps, facing a rape, the death of a brother, lice, scarlet fever and near starvation. Yet, her story becomes one of courage and love and luck in the harshest of times. She falls in love with fellow prisoner Dick Hillman, who's involved with the Czech partisans in the countryside, and they help each other keep hope alive. They indeed make Schindler's list and survive until liberation, soon thereafter marrying and making their way to New York City. Hillman, born Hannelore Wolff, has written a memoir of astonishing power, told in plain, clear prose, even more powerful for its matter-of-fact tone. The facts speak for themselves in this work that ought to make its way into many high school Holocaust programs. (map) (Nonfiction. 13+) (Kirkus Reviews)

Devastated when I finished it
By Reviewer
This was one of those books I never wanted it to end. I was devastated . Even though it was fiction, I know I learned a whole lot about France in World War 2. The author was able to get me fully connected to every character even with the 75 year gap. I fully recommend this book to anyone. You will be part of their family, you will be brave, in love,in hate, and under the rein of Hitler and his army.

The Upper Half of the Motorcycle: On the Unity of Rider and Machine, by Bernt Spiegel

Due to the popularity of Bernt Spiegel's The Upper Half of the Motorcycle in its original German, leading to multiple editions and printings, the book has been translated into English to bring its provocative message to a wider audience. Spiegel's metaphor considers the rider and the motorcycle as a single unit, the rider being the upper half. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, Spiegel draws on anthropology, psychology, biology, physics, and other disciplines to analyze the theory and function of the man-machine unit. Motorcycle riding is seen as a serendipitous junction where people have created machines for personal transport and then become so adept at using them that the machine becomes like an artificial limb -- part of the rider himself. The ultimate goal for riders is the integration of the man-machine interface and skill development to the point of virtuosity. Spiegel considers the various aspects of motorcycle riding that must be understood, practiced, and mastered before virtuosity can be attained. Many anecdotes, supplementary material, and in-depth treatment of specialized topics is contained in sidebars and footnotes. Numerous diagrams and photographs illustrate the book's principles.

Review

"There are a number of books available that'll explain the dynamics of motorcycling and how to take advantage of them, but there are few, if any, that first focus on you, the rider. Bernt Spiegel's book, "The Upper Half of the Motorcycle on the Unity of Rider and Machine," is in its ninth printing and finally translated into English. A German behavioral psychologis, Spiegel uncovers new insights and gives unique perspectives that challenge the reader to think about riding from an intrinsic standpoint instead of a mechanical one." - Sport Rider

"Spiegel says motorcycles can function like a body part; i.e., a prosthetic limb. In fact, some amputees become competitive athletes. He uses physics, biology, psychology and anthropology (and other sciences) to look at the human/motorcycle unit. The subtitle nails it: "...on the unity of rider and machine," and he offers fascinating techniques to integrate the function of the motorcycle into your unconscious. it's an ideal gift for the motorcyclist who likes thinking about the "how" and "why" of riding. So popular, it's gone through nine printings and three editions in German. Now in English, thanks to translator Meredith Hassal." - Motorcycle Consumer News

"Wunderbar! This legendary and highly popular motorcycle strategy book by Bernt Spiegel, that explores the unity of rider and machine, has been on my wish list for a long time. Unfortunately, I can't read German. Fortnately, the good folks at Whitehorse Press have made an English translation possible. No other book defines the man-machine unity like this one does. Danke Whitehorse Press!" - Rider

"Few motorcycle books tackle the physical and mental facets of motorcycling the way The Upper Half does. It provides practical information for improving "riding behavior" and delves into aspects of motorcycling that promise to deepen the understanding of the machines we love." - Motorcycle News

About the Author
A behavioral psychologist and university professor, Bernt Spiegel is the senior instructor of Motorrad magazine's Perfection Training program at Nurburgring.

Transformative!
By Craig Roberts
This book does for motorcyclists what Wolfgang Langeweische's seminal work, Stick and Rudder, did for aviators. It builds and sharpens skills through a thorough understanding of how the machine in question acts in its natural, steady state and -- more importantly -- WHY it reacts to our control inputs the way it does and why, in many cases, its proper control requires counter-intuitive actions and reactions from us.

Admittedly, Spiegel's book is not as reader-friendly as Langeweiche's. Spiegel is a behavorial psychologist and it shows. He obviously enjoys and takes great pride in his analytical talents and peppers his work with sometimes esoteric observations and anecdotes. Yet, the more scholarly and initially less accessible aspects of the work are nicely balanced by simple, useful and practical training and riding hints and tips. Taken as a whole, the book comes together nicely in the end though, as others have noted, it may require some rereading in parts. Study rather than casual reading of Spiegel's book is well worth the effort and the "aha!" moments experienced by the serious student can be positively transformative.

Not incidentally, Meredith Hassall, who must have been faced with a formidable task, translated this book from German into English expertly and beautifully. Wunderbar!

The 'mental' side of motorcycling - what no one told you.
By Conrad
This is a great book that deals with the mental side of motorcycling - all the things that no one told you, and you need to know.

First of all, I need to mention that this is a fairly heavy read. It's not a book that you can expect to read through and understand, I found that I needed to re-read certain portions numerous times until I understood it completely. This could be due to the fact it is a translation from a German language original, or maybe Mr Speigel has written it as he thought best. I have been recommending this book to alot of people, but always with that caution - which seems well justified now that I read other reviews here and find that there is even a medical doctor who has failed to comprend the great points to be found in this book...

To anyone who is skeptical that Upper Half could actually contain any valuable information that you haven't heard before, just stop to think - how many times have you heard a motorcycle racer say that racing is 10% physical and 90% mental? There's a reason for that. For anyone who takes the time to really think about motorcycling - indeed performance motorcycling - it's obvious that there is a very large mental component involved. What I find very surprising is that there are not many books or instruction that deals with the mental side. Upper Half is a valuable resource that practically fulfils that entire void and answers questions that you hadn't even thought about.

If you have ever struggled with being 'afraid' to use greater lean angle, or being unsure about the limits of traction - this is the book that can answer your questions. Rather than just telling you what to do, or what not to do, Upper Half actually explains the reasons behind why we are afraid to use extreme lean angles, and why we can have such trouble coming to terms with the traction provided by modern sports tyres. This is a great approach. Personally I found it to be much more powerful and effective once I know the reason why, rather than just doing something without knowing the reason for it. I spent some time thinking about the points in this book, and once I 'got my head right' it was amazing that it had an instant effect on my riding, and every aspect of my riding - road, track, and everything in between.

For anyone who is thinking that they are interested in learning more about the mental side of motorcycling, but aren't sure you can make it through some heavy reading - I would recommend starting with Total Control by Lee Parks, which touches on some points in a much easier to read manner. For people who want more - Upper Half is comprehensive and sure to inform.

Not for Everybody - But it Should Be
By T. W.
I've been riding my whole life and I read a lot of books on motorcycle riding techniques. I also train new riders. This book gives an insight into the coordination of man and machine that I've never seen touched on before. Its not an easy read. You have to deeply consider what he is explaining. But once you understand his approach to rider/motorcycle operation new skills will surely follow.

If you desire to get the most out of your riding, becoming a more proficient rider, and really understanding what is going on as you motor down the road this book is worth reading. The author presents frequent examples to help you understand the point he is making.

This book will earn a spot on my shelf as a valued reference tool.
