Hi Readers,

We had a lot of fun writing this series. It was a project that had been on the back-burner for years--waiting until the time was right and our writing schedules aligned. Over 17,000 emails between me and Amy in Australia, Lucy in Spain and Heidi in London. We created a Pub, Sully's, in New York and I so wanted that place to be real. We created a facebook page for the series,wine labels, boarding school uniforms, timelines and many, many brothers. We went overboard (I blame the others, and possibly the wine).

My ever loving gratitude to the other authors in the series--Heidi, Lucy and Amy--for making this one sing.

Wonderful start to the series.

Pursued by the Rogue (Fairy Tales of New York 1) by Kelly Hunter is the first story in a series of four friends, I really enjoyed this story that set the stage of hoe these four women became friend while in boarding school. Skip to ten years later and the story takes off.

All four of the women are strong and talented in their own fields, though none of them are as brainy as Dawn. I was amazed that this intelligent woman felt so inadequate in her appearance then blooms into other perceived inadequates, but she did make a convincing ugly duckling.

Besides the obvious changes in the story, I loved the idea that her true love saw her as a beautiful woman, hence the swan. Finn makes a wonderful hero especially since he had never forgotten Dawn in 10 years.

Wonderful start to friends of four fairytales, dealing with fears and anxieties that are al o real. Ms. Hunter wrote this story in such a way to cause the reader to have great empathy for Dawn and Finn. I was on edge with them at the doctor’s office waiting to hear the test results.

I look forward to the all of the other friend’s stories. Each of them need an Happily Ever After. The way all good fairytales should end.

A short but well told romance in the ‘Fairy Tales of New York’ series, I enjoyed my first story by this author. Smart, driven and socially awkward Dawn Turner has been in love with smart, driven, not socially awkward Finbar Sullvan since she was a teenager. During their younger years, Dawn and Fin had a single indiscretion that went further and had more repercussions that either of them ever planned. After 10 years of no contact, can these two put aside their past to build a future?

For someone who was hurt by and didn’t like secrets, Dawn kept some big things secrets. Even with that in mind, I still liked her because she wanted to be a good person. She didn’t take things for granted and she wasn’t spiteful with her actions or in-actions. It’s a credit to the writing because it’s a fine line between an angst filled heroine and a whiny heroine – Dawn remained the former. There was enough character growth and development for her that I didn’t understand her choices.

I thought Fin was great. He had enough boy-next-door humor, humility, and moments of vulnerability without being too contrived that I really wanted him to get his girl. His patience with Dawn was refreshing but I was also glad to see that he didn’t present himself as the doormat either.

There were some delicate topics that were introduced but got swept under the rug that I wish didn’t happen but I also understand that this is a novella. I highly recommend this, if you’re in the mood for a quick but satisfying read about a couple of 20-somethings falling in love and getting their HEA.

Lovely novella , great start to a series

A wonderful start to the Fairytales of New York series; Ms Hunter brings a fresh look at The Ugly Duckling fairytale.

Dawn Turnsr is a successful biotech company owner , but for all of her success, she's a lonely women, of her own choice;as a young girl at boarding school she very often felt like an outsider the ugly duckling amongst her girlfriends , sent away by her parents to her Aunts in New York she feels unloved.
Everyone she takes a chance on loving , she feels she looses, so when her freind Kathleen's brother Finnbar takes intrest in her though she has an incredible night with him, she pushes him away.

Ten years later , encouraged by her school friends to get together for a reunion , she never imagined running into Finn also ; or for that matter for Finn to still be interested in her! Finn is everything she feels she is not, handsome outgoing popular violinist , travels the world and could have any women he wants. So, why want an ugly ducking like her,, with her secrets, even without them her family did not want her..

Finn has spent the last ten years thinking about Dawn , and her brush off ten years ago, he did not understand it then , he was sure they had a connection, no relationship since has felt as right . Seeing Dawn. She is even more beautiful now and he is determined to get her to agree to date him again.

Dawn has set up her line of defense , so she doesn't get hurt, determined to be the one in control, no lose or pain for her and she flat out tells Finn , she is willing to casually date but it is sex only, no commitments . Finn accepts her terms but it's just to get his foot in the door because he wants more , always has! Finn has to work to break through her line of defense and unlock the secrets Dawn keeps , along with the one she keeps from him.
Can Finn get Dawn to see what everyone else really sees? Can he get her to reveal her secrets? Can he get her to give them a real chance?

Do not buy this horrible book!

I don't know what made me buy this book ,especially since there weren't any reviews for it... however, I'm posting this review here so that no one makes the mistake of wasting $5 on the most useless piece of text I have in my house, will probably use it as a coaster. The projects are just pictures of finished products with an occasional isometric diagram with measurements, no instructions nothing, just thoughts and ideas of the people who designed them.

Book is only pictures and philosophy - no cut list

I've built furniture for several years and usually enjoy these "do-it-yourself" books. However, the furniture projects in this book have no detailed instructions on how to build them!! The pictures are beautiful and yes, if I tried hard enough I sure could emulate the pieces. However, the benefit of books like this is that you get projects which are ready to make - there are usually detailed CUT-LISTS and step-by-step directions.

About the Author
Mark S. Rye, PhD, is associate professor of psychology at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. He received his PhD in clinical psychology from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, and is a licensed clinical psychologist. His research in the field of positive psychology, which focuses on how forgiveness and gratitude relate to mental health, has been funded by the John Templeton Foundation and the Fetzer Institute.

Crystal Dea Moore, PhD, is professor, chair of the department of social work, and holds the endowed Quadracci Chair of Social Responsibility at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY. She received her PhD in social welfare from the University at Albany, State University of New York, and is a licensed clinical social worker.

Save your money. Definitely not worth $12. Moderately interesting premise. In a nutshell the plot is uninformed good vs uninformed good. The twist near the end is obvious. The ending makes no sense.

I bought this book several months ago and finally got around to picking it off my bookshelf. Now I have regrets.

I did not get very far, but find myself severely disappointed. I read the first 22-24 pages, and decided that I could go no farther. The biggest surprise for me is that this book is not designated Young Adult (as far as I can tell. And since one of the blurbs on the back mentions the word sexy, I really didn't think it would be YA).

This book reads like a 5th to 8th grader wrote it via streaming consciousness. There are so many disjointed thoughts and extremely unrealistic interactions...in the first 24 pages.

The main character gets lost in the woods, and once she is found by her parents, they immediately begin a crazy stream of ranting at her. The first thing her mother tells her is: "You nearly scared us to death. We've been searching, along with all of the neighbors. I swear you must think my time is worthless. You've made me blow a deadline for a management productivity analysis."

What the hell? What parent would speak to their child this way after organizing a neighborhood search party to look for her? The dialogue goes, just as inexplicably, in similar fashion. I read a few passages to people at work. I had things thrown at me.

I cannot in good conscience recommend this book to anyone.

Unique and weird in the best possible way

This book mixes so many familiar sf ideas together in such a unique and weird way--and I mean that in the best way possible.

The novel opens with six-year-old Patricia discovering she can talk to birds. Then there's a jump in time and we meet Laurence, a bullied middle-schooler who has created a watch that can jump 2 seconds into the future, and he's also working on AI with a computer he created in his closet. Patricia goes to the same school as he, and is also bullied. When he hires her to convince his parents she's his 'hiking' friend, their lives take a turn, and are forever after entwined.

Oh, and there's also the assassin school counselor who's trying to take them both out because he claims they bring on the apocalypse in the future.

The first 116 pages take place in this middle-school Hell, but the rest of the novel takes place when they're both adults. They went their separate ways at the end of middle school, but now, as adults, they 'accidentally' keep meeting, again and again. Patricia is a member of a witch society, and Laurence is creating a machine that will transport people to another planet if the earth collapses.

This novel is a love story, an apocalypse story, an AI story, a magic story. Oh, and also philosophical. Take some of these lines:

""Well," Patricia said. "A society that has to burn witches to hold itself together is a society that has already failed, and just doesn't know it yet."" (This one probably needs to go up on my writing board)

The novel's not perfect, it can get a little messy at times, but it is unique and takes risks, and made me think. It's one I'd enjoy re-reading, and I've already recommended it to 2-3 people.

About the Author

A.C. Grayling is professor of philosophy at Birkbeck College, University of London. He is the author of the acclaimed Among the Dead Cities: The History and Moral Legacy of the WWII Bombing of Civilians in Germany and Japan, Descartes: The Life and Times of a Genius, and Toward the Light of Liberty: The Struggles for Freedom and Rights That Made the Modern Western World. A fellow of the World Economic Forum and past chairman of the human rights organization June Fourth, he contributes frequently to the Times, Financial Times, Economist, New Statesman, and Prospect. Grayling's play "Grace," co-written with Mick Gordon, has played to full houses in London and New York, starring Lynn Redgrave; its central debate over the virtue of religion gives Grayling a strong platform for The Good Book. An Atheist's Review

I bought this book with no expectations. I had read an article about it, as an atheist I liked the idea and wanted to support Grayling's work so I bought it. I really was pleasantly surprised.

This book is not a compilation of work. You will not open it up and find passages from various works called out by author. It is truly written in the style of the Bible - Grayling has taken the collected wisdom of hundreds of secular philosophers and melded it together in the flowery prose form typical of the Bible. There is no reference list at the back to tell you where anything came from, he has taken the ideas and the texts and melted them together.

The Good Book begins with Genesis, where you can see the ideas of Darwin laid out in an inspirational way. Reading through this I was really pleasantly surprised at how much I liked it. I'm used to this language being peppered with things I don't believe in, and listening to it at weddings or funerals generally gives me a lump in my stomach. Here was the same kind of lofty language, but saying the things I believed! I didn't realize how much I would enjoy hearing Darwin's theory of evolution told as a beautiful story of how we began and the cycle of life.

As you make your way though the book, you can clearly see where he has incorporated Plato's dialogs, but without specific references. Characters are mentioned in the same way as the Bible, introduced without preamble, just snippets of conversation or story which attempt to showcase an idea. There are passages on grief and death as well.

If you are looking to learn the works of these philosophers in an intellectual way, this is not the book for you. This book is meant to absorb the ideas they upheld in a more spiritual feeling way. I wish this book had been published before I got married, I would have looked for a passage from it to read at my wedding. I could see reading it at a funeral, there really is something cathartic about having grief and death and moving on with life written in this way.

I feel in some ways as an Atheist this may have been what I was missing and didn't realize it. I didn't have anything to help me find a way to feel good about my place in nature's greater story, I just felt the absence of the belief in an afterlife. I also feel like this is a book I could read to my kids to help them figure out how to be a good person in a world which is not always good and in which you cannot rely on a all powerful being to save you from your problems. The language is flowery and poetic, but its also much more accessible than say Kant's Metaphysics of Morals. I minored in philosophy in college, I'm by no means an expert, but I have read some of these works and they are by no means easy to absorb.

So, I think for what this book is trying to accomplish, what it says it is in the description, it is a great work.

Temper your expectations

There are a lot of reviews on here less than 5 stars. Carefully read some before you pass this book over. A.C. Grayling has produced a timeless work worthy of the highest esteem. Some descriptions make this sound like an anthology, a refutation of the bible, or worse. It is none of the above. It is painstakingly crafted, beautifully laid out on the page, and an immense volume that you will enjoy for a long time. I found myself pondering passages carefully. They are written in beautiful prose sometimes and clever rhymes at others. There are quotes within quotes within stories told be sages, and voices from unknown and unidentifiable speakers.
Others say dense, I say full of subtleties.
Others say hard to read, I say filled with english of the highest degree.
Others say devoid of references, I say the knowledge is timeless.

Do not delve into this looking to have atheistic beliefs reinforced, passages by ancient authors quoted, summarized, and referenced, or to have science presented as a refutation to the biblical history of the world. This is a work that should be taken wholly unto itself. Enjoy.

The Good Book

It actually seems to me like it's a shame it is touted as an atheist's bible, as that label will undoubtedly alienate a lot of religious people who might otherwise enjoy and benefit from its contents. I haven't read the whole thing, of course, but what I have read I've really enjoyed. It's a book that everyone could enjoy, religious or not.
It doesn't seem to be promoting or teaching atheism, but is just a collection of wisdom and philosophy.
The text is nicely written with language not unlike the poetic bent of a modern-language bible. It's actually easier and more pleasant to read, IMO.
I will say, too, that when I'm reading this book, I do come away from it feeling really good. I don't put it down wondering what the heck I just read means. It's a very calming read.
