The Three Christs of Ypsilanti (New York Review Books Classics), by Milton Rokeach

On July 1, 1959, at Ypsilanti State Hospital in Michigan, the social psychologist Milton Rokeach brought together three paranoid schizophrenics: Clyde Benson, an elderly farmer and alcoholic; Joseph Cassel, a failed writer who was institutionalized after increasingly violent behavior toward his family; and Leon Gabor, a college dropout and veteran of World War II.

The men had one thing in common: each believed himself to be Jesus Christ. Their extraordinary meeting and the two years they spent in one another’s company serves as the basis for an investigation into the nature of human identity, belief, and delusion that is poignant, amusing, and at times disturbing. Displaying the sympathy and subtlety of a gifted novelist, Rokeach draws us into the lives of three troubled and profoundly different men who find themselves “confronted with the ultimate contradiction conceivable for human beings: more than one person claiming the same identity.”

Review
“The Three Christs of Ypsilantiis more than the record of an experiment in the outermost reaches of social psychology. Among other things it represents, in an unpretentious but remarkably vivid way, what institutionalized madness is like.”
-Steven Marcus,The New York Review of Books

“A rare and eccentric journey into the madness of not three, but four men in an asylum. It is, in that sense, an unexpected tribute to human folly, and one that works best as a meditation on our own misplaced self-confidence. Whether scientist or psychiatric patient, we assume others are more likely to be biased or misled than we are, and we take for granted that our own beliefs are based on sound reasoning and observation. This may be the nearest we can get to revelation—the understanding that our most cherished beliefs could be wrong.”
—Vaughan Bell,Slate

“The Three Christs is part meticulous log-book, part intriguing commentary and part high-voltage play as Rokeach recreates the men's interactions over 25 months. Rokeach's aim was to force them to confront ‘the ultimate contradiction’ of believing they were the same being….Reissued for the first time in over 25 years, it comes with a pithy and sensitive preface by Rick Moody, foregrounding both changing attitudes to institutional care and the problems and possibilities of Rokeach's experiment.” – The Guardian

"It also seemed to me, aged 16, that The Three Christs of Ypsilanti contained everything there was to know about the world. That’s not the case of course, but if resources were short, I’d still be inclined to salvage this book as a way of explaining the terror of the human condition, and the astonishing fact that people battle for their rights and dignity in the face of that terror, in order to establish their place in the world, whatever they decide it has to be." -- Jenny Diski, London Review of Books

About the Author
Milton Rokeach (1918–1988) was born in Hrubieszw, Poland, and at the age of seven moved with his family to Brooklyn. He received his BA from Brooklyn College in 1941. In the same year he began in the fledgling social psychology program at the University of California at Berkeley, but his studies were interrupted by a stint in the U.S. Army Air Forces Aviation Psychology Program. He returned to Berkeley in 1946 and received his PhD in 1947. Rokeach became a professor of psychology at Michigan State University and subsequently taught at the University of Western Ontario, Washington State University, andthe University of Southern California. His famous psychological study The Three Christs of Ypsilanti (1964) has been made into a screenplay, a stage play, and two operas. His other major books are The Open and Closed Mind (1960), Beliefs, Attitudes, and Values (1968), and The Nature of Human Values (1973). Rokeach received the Kurt Lewin Memorial Award from the Society for the Psychological Study of Social Issues in 1984 and the Harold Lasswell Award from the International Society of Political Psychology in 1988.

Rick Moody was born in New York City in 1961. He is the author of five novels, three collections of stories, and a memoir, The Black Veil. His work has been widely anthologized. He has taught at Bennington College, SUNY Purchase, New York University, and the New School for Social Research. He lives in Brooklyn, New York.

A landmark study of personality
By M. Bromberg
The premise of Rokeach's study (bringing people together who share the same delusion) has broad implications: in a culture with so many shared ideas and values, what sets us apart as individuals? In this 1960s experiment, of course, these three patients have been diagnosed with a proven pathology. In society at large most of us seek out friends and associates with whom we share a great deal; yet our sense of personality is still a matter of individual choices. At end, this was the same discovery Rokeach made with his three Christs; when confronted with the truth, these three men made personal choices allowing for the existence of the others -- a society of Christs. I first read this in the early 1970s as part of an anthropology course, and although I am not a health care professional I found it a fascinating study, one that carries the reader with an almost novel-like flow. For those who read it with care, it will provoke a lot of questions about what makes us who we are, both as individuals and as members of society. A fictional parallel to many of the ideas in this book, though by no means exact, can be found in Nigel Dennis's 1955 novel "Cards of Identity."

A psychological study that reads like a good novel
By Patrick W. Crabtree
Take three mentally ill institutionalized men, each of whom firmly believes that he is Jesus Christ. Put them all in one place and let them talk to one another. What happens? Find out! This is a true story and a fluid read, (no major technical jargon -- edited like a novel).

This study was carried out over a lengthy period of time by state psychiatrist Milton Rokeach (the book author) in Ypsilanti, Michigan in 1964. One might question Rokeach's ethics in carrying out such an experiment with three such delusional men but, had it led to a cure for any of their respective mental difficulties, one could say that the end justified the means. And it was, of course, Rokeach's objective to help these men.

This book is often difficult to find and is usually rather expensive when it is located, typically around $30 for a hardcover edition. Still, it's a great read and anyone who has an interest in social science will find it especially riveting.

schizopoetry
By Eric V. Jung
Others better qualified than I have commented on the psychological aspects, and the novel-like flow of the book. What I don't see mentioned, and what struck me, is the overlap between the language of the three Christs and the language of the poetry of the same period - Dylan, John Lennon, Ginsberg, Burroughs, Kerouac. The Christs, coming from delusion, paranoia, and dysfunctional mental processes, speak or write throwing off jarring, powerful metaphors that make no sense lying on the page but make hypersense when allowed to rattle around in your head. There are stretches that remind me, especially, of Dylan's "Tarantula" or Lennon's "In His Own Write"; or Captain Beefheart at his wordplaying best. There's plenty there for the psychologists to chew on - why does a Kerouac or a Ginsberg sound like an institutionalized delusional Christ, and vice versa. Anyway - in this very entertaining and disturbing book, there's material for a thousand New Wave or Punk band names. And there's more reality in the three Christs than in a hundred tv "reality" shows or a thousand Hollywood movies.

Review
“Teachers and researchers at every level will find fruitful guidance in this important book on the generative process of children’s reading and spelling and the effect of the learning environment. Nunes and Bryant have provided a rigorous, systematic, and thorough theory/research-into-practice analysis of using conditional rules in learning to read and spell and intervention strategies. They are among the first researchers to emphasize the connection between oral language and written language through morphological, syntactical, and word-specific knowledge over and above phonology. The book is a tour de force, rich in details, lucid and insightful.”–Che Kan Leong, Research Professor Emeritus, University of Saskatchewan, Canada and Hon. Professor, Chinese University of Hong Kong

“I could not be more enthusiastic about this book. I would love to see this volume reach as many readers as possible in the research community and in the practitioner community. This book will become the ‘bible’ of the more advanced stages of spelling development that remain understudied.”–Keith E. Stanovich, Professor of Human Development and Applied Psychology, University of Toronto

“Children's Reading and Spelling, by two pioneers in research on how phonological and morphological awareness contribute to written word learning, is a must-read for beginning and seasoned researchers, as well as psychology and education students.”–Virginia Berninger, Professor of Educational Psychology, Center on Human Development and Disability, University of Washington

From the Back Cover
Children's Reading and Spelling draws upon internationally renowned research to extend models of early literacy. While most psychologists have concentrated on the ways in which very young children begin to read and spell, here the focus shifts to how these skills are developed beyond the initial stages.

As children mature, their approach to reading and spelling alters radically, and evidence suggests these changes continue throughout their school career. Authors Terezinha Nunes and Peter Bryant theorize that children use both informal experiences as well as more formalized instruction to devise their own conditional spelling rules. Ideas are presented in an interesting and accessible way, and potential educational implications are thoroughly examined. This innovative research has much to offer professionals and parents alike.

Maria Montessori describes the child with warmth and the exactness of a scientist. She also discusses the array of materials and techniques needed to release his learning potential.

About the Author
Maria Montessori was born in Rome in 1870. She was the first woman medical graduate of the University of Rome. After working as Assistant Doctor in the Clinic of Psychiatry, she was the Director (1898-1900) of the Scuola Ortofrenica, a school for children with special needs which had been founded as a result of her interest in such children. She also studied Philosophy at the University of Rome, with particular emphasis on the psychology of childhood, and lectured to students there in Pedagogical Anthropology. Around 1909, she developed the Montessori method, the famous system of education for children aged three to six, based on free discipline and free choice by children from stimulating learning apparatus provided to them. She was soon in charge of 50 schools for slum children called the Case dei Bambini in which her system was applied. From 1919 onwards she traveled round the world every other year conducting courses in teaching by the Montessori method, holding similar courses every alternate year in London. She died in 1952.

Until Maria Montessori, all we knew about little kids is that they should be seen and not heard ...
By Lady in LA
If you care about the life of children, or you are an educator, or a parent of little ones, you owe it to yourself to know about Maria Montessori. She pioneered early childhood education in the late 1800s. She was Italy's first female MD.

She discovered then what we know scientifically now: that children do most of their key development from birth through age 5. And that sets the foundation for learning and success for the rest of their lives.

I went to a Montessori preschool and my mom had early learning materials at home. I could read and do my times tables before I started kindergarten. I'm not unique; I just had the right experience. It's a small book and a fascinating read. This is just one of several she wrote. Clearly, I'm a fan :o)

This view is of the Mass Market Paperback edition (1982) from Ballantine Books. The Paperback edition (2009) from Orient Blackswan that you originally viewed is the one you'll receive if you click the Add to Cart button on the left."

But in reality, it does change a lot of contents! i should say, it lost a lot of original contents! i don't understand why amazon put the wording like the above.

So, please, whoever wants to know the original Dr. Maria Montessori's idea about "the secret of childhood", go with the mass market paperback one although it is a little bit hard to read due to the small font. But it's absolutely worthy. It explained thoroughly. Not like this one, kind like cheating the reader.

Beyond brilliant! For every parent, prospective, parent and educator!
By Jasmine Smith
I have to say the first time I read this book I was 21 and I didn't get very far and found it quite difficult to follow, two education degrees and two children later I will happily admit I have learnt more through this book than both my degree combined. This woman was brilliant and her discoveries (not theories), were absolutely ground breaking. What she discovered and revealed through scientific observation 100 years ago, neuroscience and brain imaging has been confirming in recent decades. 100 years ahead of her time.

Review
"The practical lessons in The Sketchnote Workbook make it easy and fun for anyone to leverage visual note taking to help them remember more, communicate better, and develop ideas more completely." -Todd Henry, author of Die Empty

"If you want to succeed in capturing and communicating your ideas, you need to read this book. Because it's not merely a book: It's a blueprint for a new way of thinking, and it's fantastically useful." - Daniel Coyle, The New York Times best-selling author of The Talent Code and The Little Book of Talent

"Mike has created a resource that will inspire anyone to take their doodling to a new level and begin using sketchnoting in every aspect of their lives. After reading this book, I know my recipe cards and travel journals will never look the same again!" - C.C. Chapman, author of Amazing Things Will Happen

"Mike Rohde wants you to understand a simple idea: Drawing aids thinking. Or, even better, drawing IS thinking. I fully agree with him: Pen and paper amplify our thinking when we use them to record what we see, and to reflect on what it means. This book, as its predecessor, The Sketchnote Handbook, will not just make you a better artist, it'll make you a better thinker." - Alberto Cairo, author of The Functional Art

"I present information as narrated visuals so Mike's approach makes a lot of sense to me. Visuals are key to understanding complexity, and the combination of images and text as notes is always more effective than notes alone. Sometimes they are more effective than the original presentation." - Horace Dediu, founder of Asymco

People Think Differently - Here's a way to take notes that will give you more
By Jason W. Womack, M.ED., M.A.
[[VIDEOID:mo2VAQYDBRBMUP2]]Paul Jarvis and I are neighbors...kind of. When Mike emailed us asking for a testimonial for his new book, The Sketchnote Workbook, we both JUMPED at the opportunity.

There are three pages that JUMP out to me (of the 201) to start with:

Page 8: the 5 elements of drawing - this one was a game-changer for me. No, seriously, I "became an artist" when I saw this page. A square, c'mon, you can draw a square. And, a triangle, got that too... So, using those two designs, you've got a house, a bank, a mixtape (remember THOSE?), and more...

Page 17: idea generation formats - ok, those of you who know even a LITTLE bit about what I do and how I do it... You know I generate ideas. Not a lot of ideas, just big ones. Then, when I generate an idea, I want more ideas...about THAT idea. The three formats that Mike gives on this page make buying (and using) this book worth it. I mean, really, you've got a 20 dollar idea in your head, right? Now it's time to get it out, to write it out, to do something about it. Ready? GO!

Page 201: It's about getting started. Step - by - step. Mike writes:

"Remember: Experiments NOT Assignments."

If you are looking for another way to get ideas out of your head, and see them in new (and creative) ways, I highly recommend this book.

(Full disclosure: I did purchase my copy of his book; it's what author-friends do for one another!)

Paul and I share space - testimonials - on the back cover of Mike Rohde's book. I know I can speak for the both of us when I say, "We not only endorse, but we USE this book." My life is better since I met Mike at an impromptu #CoffeeChat in Portland two years ago. I hope you gain as much value as I have from "knowing" him, and knowing of his work.

Onward...This is the book you get, when you want to Get Momentum.

Even developers can sketchnote
By Eric
As a developer I am constantly taking notes while reading, planning features, and attending conferences. Conferences are the hardest for me because of how fast the talks go. If I'm writing then I have to be quick and my notes end up being illegible.

My notes look cool but impossible to read. That's what excited me when I heard Mike Rohde was writing a book about sketchnoting.

I'm not good at it, but I love drawing and being able to take notes with drawings and characters excites me. So I picked up his first book, the "Sketchnote Handbook", and started practicing. With five basic shapes, the alphabet, a little imagination, and practice, you can draw anything. The great thing is drawing simple shapes is faster than writing and much easier to visually look at to remember what the notes were about.

I've been able to use the same patterns and tips outside of just notes. For example I use it for feature planning, UI designs, and other areas of my work. If you enjoy drawing even a little get this book. Not only does it include great tips, but it's a beautiful high quality book. It's the coolest on my book shelf!

Mike has recently released a new update named the "Sketchnote Workbook" this time when you purchase you not only get the book but also a two hour video. This new update shows you how to take the basic sketchnoting skills taught in the Handbook and use them in new and fun ways like traveling, food journal, and others. What could be cooler?

If you are interested in trying new ways of taking notes buy his book. I highly recommend it.

Very effective visual note taking and idea generation techniques
By Robert M Dimeo
Rohde’s two books--"The Sketchnote Handbook” and “The Sketchnote Workbook” are simple instruction manuals for a skill that’s been very useful for me in my job. The books themselves are excellent examples of the ideas contained within.

This approach to information recording may not appeal to everyone but I’ve found that sketchnoting (or “personal infodoodling” if you’ve read Sunni Brown) can be used (1) for highly effective note-taking during meetings, and (2) organizing my own thoughts in a visual and engaging way. This has great appeal to me in my work as a technical leader. I’ve returned to these visual notes much more often than any that I previously took. One claim that the book makes—and one that I strongly support—is that this helps with information retention. The book also claims that it’s relaxing and fun…also true for me. I’ve found this approach to be particularly useful during dry (but important) meetings. Translating dry ideas into some simple visual representation can help draw you in (sorry…no pun intended) and make you more engaged in the topic.

Where these techniques really seem to help me is in idea generation, a topic that Rohde covers in some detail in “The Sketchnote Workbook.” I’ve used this technique to create one-pagers of visual notes (for my own personal consumption and use) on tough issues that our organization faces, strategic planning, presentation creation, and even in preparation for performance evaluations. I now make a visual one-pager (at least a quick one) before drafting any lengthy work-related document. It really helps. There are few areas in my work where this is not useful.

If this type of note-taking is new to you (as it certainly was to me), my advice is to commit to trying it out for some period of time. I committed to doing this for one month. In my job this meant (1) creating visual notes for one or more meetings and/or scientific seminars per day, (2) making about 20 idea generation visual one-pagers during that month, and (3) contending with some very odd looks (and even odder questions) from colleagues sitting near me during meetings. At the end of that first month (1) my visual notes got a lot better, (2) I’m referring back to those visual one-pagers more than once and using them for preparation for follow-on meetings, (3) and not getting as many looks from colleagues—but sharing the notes occasionally when asked.

The Dragon's Boy, by Jane Yolen

"In order to gain wisdom, you must learn to read inter linea, between the lines."

Artos doesn't know who his parents are, just that kindly Sir Ector and Lady Marion took him into their castle when he was a baby. Though Sir Ector raises him as one of his sons, Artos never feels he truly belongs. The other boys of the castle -- Cai, Bedvere, and Lancot -- make fun of him and never invite him to join in their games.

One day, while searching for Sir Ector's missing brachet hound in the fens around the castle, Artos stumbles across a musty cave in a hill where a very old dragon lives. Though he is afraid, he is drawn to the beast by both the dragon's knowledge and his promise to teach Artos the game of wisdom. With the dragon's guidance, Artos begins the slow journey to his destiny-one that he never dreamed could belong to him.

From School Library Journal
A good introduction to Arthurian legend, this is a retelling of the education and coming of age of 13-year-old Artos (Arthur). Old Linn (Merlin) is to be his teacher, but, doubting he can command the boy's attention, he constructs a fire-breathing dragon as a facade. Behind this imposing apparition, he impresses Artos into becoming his student. However, when Artos discovers the dragon's true identity, he becomes angry. When Old Linn explains Artos' lineage and hints that his destiny is to be a leader of men, the boy reconsiders their relationship. Basing the story on recognized Arthurian scholarship, Yolen skillfully develops those aspects of Artos' character that will guide him in his adult life--courage, compassion, and fairness. The book serves as a foundation for further reading of Arthurian tales. Some of the vocabulary and references to Celtic folklore may be unfamiliar to readers, but these add authenticity and richness without detracting from the enjoyment of the story. --Virginia Golodetz, St. Michael's College, Winooski, VT

Young Arthur and an old dragon

An ancient dragon teaches young Arthur some valuable lessons. I have enjoyed Yolen's other fantasy and dragon books better.

A very different take on the Pendragon myth...
By A Customer
I read "The Dragon's Boy" originally as a short story in Jane Yolen's collection "Here There Be Dragons," and found it thoughtful, moving, and above all a purely enjoyable story. When I found it had been expanded into a novel, I was a little wary. I wasn't quite sure what would happen to it. Then I read the novel, and all fears were set to rest. While there are distinct differences in the action of the endings of the short story and the novel, the main point remains unchanged, and I enjoyed finding small episodes of the short story fleshed out into chapters of the novel without ever becoming overblown. Most of all, I love the final revelation of "The Dragon's Boy," when Artos, who has been gaining wisdom from a dragon hidden in a secret cave on the moors, finds out at last the true identity of his dragon. I would argue that the ending is the high point of the book, not anticlimactic of all. I was not entirely surprised when I read it for the first time, because I had enough familiarity with various Arthurian retellings to pick up on certain names when they came around-but rest assured, that did not in any way diminish my enjoyment of the story. "The Dragon's Boy" is a fascinating slant on the early life of King Arthur (made famous in "The Sword and the Stone," by T.H. White) and an excellent novel in its own right. Read, by request of the dragon, and you will certainly enjoy.

THE PRICE OF ARTHURIAN WISDOM
By Plume45
A master at creating fantasy and recreating the mythos of the Arthurian legends (see MERLIN'S BOOKE) Jane Yolen offers readers an original tale from Arthur's youth--with hints of his legendary future. Thirteen-year-old Artos, orphaned fosterling of Sir Ector, finds himself the youngest of a band of unruly, illiterare, nobly-bred bullies--though barely accepted by them. In danger of growing into one of the wild bunch Artos stumbles upon a cave whose very exsientence he did not suspect. Unwiilling but even more curious he soon becomes drawn to its unseen occupant: a harsh-voiced old dragon. For reasons known best to himself this Master of Riddles has chosen young Artos to reveal his wisdom of more than a lifetime.

In this 120-page novella Artos gradually realizes that there are many kinds of wisdom, from diverse and even contradictory sources--some of which he must puzzle out for hismelf: book learning, reading between the lines of life or one's palm, court protocol and courtyard smarts--not to mention navigating the intricacies of the human heart. Christened with a new and mysterious patronymic epithet Artos must mature to ultimately don with pride and dignity the surnamne of Pendragon--son of the ancient dragon, whom he has finanlly grown to love.

The literary pacing changes in the last two chapters, where plot and action become secondary to more serious dialogue. With oblique references to Arthur's future glory in Celtic legend Yolen includes pages of deep introspection which may
strain the interest of younger readers. Yet we can never get enough insight into the creator of Camelot--a shining milieu which has captured the imagination of Weastern civilization for centuries--from the twilight of the Roman era to our present age. The world will long cherish and remain the richer for Arthur's legacy
of justice and chivalry.

This book looks at why ethnographic approaches have been turned to in the design of computing devices for the workplace, for the home and elsewhere. It presents a history of ethnography, both as it was practiced before computer science picked it up and since, most especially in the CSCW and HCI domains. It examines, further, the various ethnographic or ‘fieldwork’ frameworks currently popular, explaining and examining what each claims and entails. The focus of the book throughout is on the practical relationship between theory and practice, a relationship that is often misunderstood yet fundamental to successful design. The book is illustrated with real examples from the authors’ various experiences in academic and commercial settings, reporting on the use of ethnography before, during and after design innovation and implementation. The result is a book that provides the working knowledge necessary for using any kind of ethnographic approach in the design of computer technologies.
