Jeff Kitchen worked as a dramaturge at New York’s Playwrights Preview Productions and the Negro Ensemble Company before starting to teach playwriting and screenwriting in 1991. Single greatest weapon in my writing arsenal.

No one can teach you how to write. Jeff Kitchen can teach you how to make what you write better. This book offers a wide range of dramatic tools to develop a winning premise into a fully realized script and take an existing script to the next level. Most books on screenwriting suggest "this is where you should...". And indeed it should be there, but I want to know how to do it with with my story? Jeff not only shows you where to go, he gives you several ways to get there. His explanation of central dilemma is worth the meager $13.57 asking price. Do yourself a favor buy this book (I did and the response to my screenplay has gone from "good" to "I couldn't put it down").

Look no further, Jeff Kitchen's book is the gold standard for building a a screenplay. I've read dozens of books on the craft, and this is the only one that leads you through the dirty work of building your story piece by piece.

Jeff's tools help you transform your tale into a compelling drama.

As a reader, you will feel like you're looking over Jeff's shoulder as he lays the bricks of a pyramid from the ground up.

I've been applying the tools to a script I previously completed. The DILEMMA tool really helped me get a handle on some weak spots regarding my main character. And the Sequence, Proposition, Plot tool blew me out of the water.

I also plan to use "Writing a Great Movie" to build other story ideas I've been working on. Jeff offers all the ingredients needed to cook up an original and memorable story.

But you still have to add the spices, brew the potion to just the right temperature and serve it to an audience hungry for a film that will "rock their world."

Jeff's book will help you do that. Too bad I could only give it five stars. It deserves at least ten.

Very useful, very practical

Unlike most screenwriting books, this one doesn't delve into formatting a script or selling a screenplay. Instead it gets deeply and thoroughly into the nuts and bolts of critical topics like storytelling, theme, and character development.

I particularly like his practical suggestions for using Polti's 36 dramatic situations and the enneagram as brainstorming tools. I've seen books on those things before but needed more information on the practical application of such tools, and this book is it. As one who writes short stories and novel-length fiction, this book has really helped me plow past some writer's block and take a hard look at my characters.

I can see using this book again and again, especially during National Novel Writing Month when I'm the most starved for a fresh idea.

I read this book overnight and it was so worth it. If you like storiesthat revolve around werewolf packs, alpha characters, and of course acompelling plot, you will get sucked into this! Totally recommend thisto everyone.

The premise sounded so interesting but the actual story just isn't living up to the plot. The writing is immature and amateur. It's terrible honestly. rather repetitive, a lot of the dialogue doesn't make much sense, sometimes everyone will be described as laughing really hard but nothing funny happened to get that reaction. I want to give an example but don't want to give away plot, so one thing I would see often is someone would read something, repeat that information word for word in a question form and then someone would answer them with the same word for word quote. "Amanda likes avocados," she read, "Amanda," she asked, "you like avocados?" "Yes," Amanda said, "I like avocados." (And no that's not a quote just an example.) I dont know how many times I read, "my mouth forms an 'O' shape" all I know is that Ill probably react violently the next time I see it. A lot of the story is rather jumbled and rushed and Axel's character is really not likable. Like when he was introduced I thought they were going to find a way to get rid of him and she would end up with this other guy. Because Axel is just terrible to her. Several times. I'm apparently not even half way through the story but I feel like I've been reading it for ages and I'm not sure if I'll finish at this rate.

Note: Book 1 and does have a happy ending and a can be read as a standalone but there are parts that are left for you to wonder about that are brought up in book 2.

This is my review of Unique, Different, Found., book 1 in The Nightfall Series. I bought this first book through Amazon. This is the start of an interesting world but it can be read as a standalone. Celina is a wolf shifter who is 16, going on 17, who has never shifted yet and who is basically treated as the lowest member on the totem pole in her pack. She is beaten, treated horrible, and forced to work like a slave. Finally one day she finds her wolf and decides it is time to go and she runs away. She runs far and wide barely making it through other packs territories without being caught. Finally one pack asks her to stop and come back with them. Axel is the clan alpha and he is only 20. Axel is a pure black wolf, a color that does not exist anymore because they were royals and were killed in a war. Celina is a pure white wolf which is also no longer an existing color because they were killed off in the same war. There is a prophecy that the white and black wolves will come together as mates. Later in the book Celina is actually asked to help her old pack which causes her old pack to find out where she is, to try to claim her back, and to start a war over her.

The age of the main characters are too young to start a physical relationship I think and also the alpha seems to be too young to get his position but then again he is special. Some of the dialogue seems repetitive and forced. I really want to know what happens in the rest of the books but I am on the fence about buying them right now.

Don't waste your time or money!

I couldn't even go further than 30 pages into this book. Its written so HORRIBLY that I needed to stop. Far too many !!!! and who in their right mind uses "gonna" in a novel?? The book moves far too fast and makes far too little sense. I am returning it when I finish this review

Tosh begins by looking at the experience of boyhood, married life, sex, and fatherhood in the early decades of the nineteenth century—illustrated by case studies representing a variety of backgrounds—and then contrasts this with the lives of the late Victorian generation. He finds that the first group of men placed a new value on the home as a reaction to the disorienting experience of urbanization and as a response to the teachings of Evangelical Christianity. Domesticity still proved problematic in practice, however, because most men were likely to be absent from home for most of the day, and the role of father began to acquire its modern indeterminacy. By the 1870s, men were becoming less enchanted with the pleasures of home. Once the rights of wives were extended by law and society, marriage seemed less attractive, and the bachelor world of clubland flourished as never before.
The Victorians declared that to be fully human and fully masculine, men must be active participants in domestic life. In exposing the contradictions in this ideal, they defined the climate for gender politics in the next century.

Tosh (history, Univ. of North London) uses primary sources to explore the contradictions inherent in 19th-century British masculinity. Many tensions lay beneath the British male's well-known veneration of home, family, and motherhood. Marriage was a prime factor in self-worth, but men were reared at elite public (i.e., private) schools to ignore or even despise women. Husbands were publicly seen as masters and the spiritual leaders of their homes and families, yet once married, men often sequestered themselves in dens and clubs, and whole categories of decisions (like child rearing) were left solely to wives and servants. Tosh traces the evolution of these tensions through the century, as the idealization of domesticity gradually decreased and marital and parental hierarchies evolved. Particularly interesting are the sections on child rearing, in which the father's role often led to estrangement and generational discord. Tosh convincingly defends his thesis that the era, instead of just being "the climax of masculine domesticity," was actually more complex. The Victorian family from the man's perspective

An interesting study of the Victorian middle-class family from the point of view of the man (as husband and father), rather than from the female point of view as is usually the case. Tosh writes well and as he bases the study on diaries and similar sources, the people he is talking about really come alive.
