dissapointing and uninformative

To begin, I think that it's important to note that Tony Buzan does not specialize in teaching Speed Reading. From what I can tell, he specializes in a technique he's coined called "Mind Mapping" which can be found in his other books: "Use Both Sides of Your Brain" and "Make the Most of Your Mind." I think that these two books are a far better use of Buzan's knowledge, as they represent areas in which he focuses the majority of his time to.

Basically, I think that this book is a decent introduction to speed reading, nothing special. You can aquire the same basic knowledge from any other speed reading books that are out there. Though the book seems to boast some sort of revolutionary approach to speed reading...don't be fooled, there is nothing revolutionary about this book. The most valuable thing about this book is that it points out the major problems that most readers have--and these problems are easily overcome, and you can improve your speed by fixing these problems:

1) Subvocalizing: mouthing words outloud or silently while you read

2) Regressing: constantly going back and re-reading material

3) Lack of concentration & interest

4) Unorganized Approach to reading: not having a set of concrete questions about the text before diving into it.

Of course, these are in no way innovative ideas in the field of speed reading.

It is very dissapointing that most of the book is dedicated to things other than speed reading, like how to take notes (Mind Mapping), vocabulary, and random passages about history/music/art..ect. Buzan 'beats around the bush' throughout the book, never really giving distinct instruction on how to reach these insane speeds he speaks of in the riviting introduction. This is not Buzan at his best..and there is certainly no "general education" being given here (not that you want one from Buzan anyway), despite claims to the contrary!

Exercises for Dramatically Reducing Comprehension Level

The book is systematic, clear, quite concise, full of motivating examples, and full of practice exercises. It is an effective training technique.

However, most of the info about reading potential is wrong, and it systematically trains you to miss important material. As far as has been measured by professional reading experts, speed reading experts are unable to read at over 700words per minute at any more than 50% comprehension. Buzan claims that you can. To prove it, he sets up some nice and clear exercises and comprehension tests.

The reading tests are concocted by him. They have all the main info to be tested in prominent places, written in a concrete way so they are easier to comprehend, and they repeat info that is written all over the book including the back cover. The tests themselves are so easy you could get over 50% correct even without reading the material. Some are common knowledge, and others can be worked out by looking at the other questions. He breaks every rule of comprehension testing in an effort to make his methods and seminars look like magic. Please do not be fooled!

If you do not like reading and you want to train yourself to misjudge comprehension, this book is for you. If you want to get a book for improving study reading, just get a good book on study techniques (sq3r etc)). If you like reading, just get one of those nice helpful books on how to understand and appreciate novels.

Excellent book if you want to improve your reading speed

I am just about half way through the book and have already double my reading speed without much difficulty while increasing my comprehension. I was a 248 words a minute reader with 66% comprehension. Now half way through and am reading 550 words a minute with 85% comprehension. The book guides you through with plenty of exercises and checks throughout with a chart to map your progress. But a word of warning: Don't just think that you can start reading 2000 words a minute just by reading this book. You do have to practice and actively push yourself to break your own barriers. If you are serious about improving yourself and willing to put in some work and practice then buy this book. There are so many crappy books out there purporting to increase your reading speed, usually only doubling your current speed (normal readers read at about 200 to 300 wpm) but Buzan promises to take you up to 2000 wpm!! But remember, you still have to work at it.

About the Author
Yoni Kahn is a PhD student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in theoretical high-energy particle physics. During his undergraduate studies at Northwestern University, he worked on dark matter phenomenology and spent a summer at Jefferson Lab doing research in nuclear physics. He is currently working on the DarkLight experiment to detect a new force of nature, as well as other experiments related to dark matter detection. In his spare time he is a freelance French hornist in the Boston area. Adam Anderson is a PhD student at Massachusetts Institute of Technology in experimental particle physics, working on direct dark matter detection and neutrino physics. He is currently a member of the Cryogenic Dark Matter Search, doing data analysis and studying how dark-matter-style detectors can be applied to other measurements in particle physics and astrophysics. His undergraduate studies were in physics and mathematics at the University of Chicago.

Too many errors

The book can serve as a useful reminder of the topics that come up on the GRE but it is full of ERRORS.

Most of the circuit equations are WRONG.

Some examples:
Page 87 equations 2.71 2.72 and 2.75 are wrong.

It is not Ceq = SUM 1/Ci. The right answer 1/Ceq = SUM 1/Ci

Page 89 equation 2.82 is also wrong.

It is not I = V/R = exp (-R/L t). The right answer is I = V/R - V/R exp (-R/L) t

Comprehensive cover of topics but riddled with errors

The book covers the topics that are required for the GRE comprehensibly. As the authors mention on their website, this book should not be used to learn the physical concepts but it provides a convenient review.

However, it is so riddled with errors that one needs to double check most statements for their correctness. Many errors are due to negligence (typos, units not matching in equations). Unfortunately, some statements are physically wrong (e.g. the authors seem to have forgotten that charge is quantised when writing sample questions).

In conclusion, the book can serve as a useful reminder of the topics that come up on the GRE but it is not suitable as a stand-alone study guide.

A must for anyone who owns a horse.

This book is a must for any horse owner. It is full of information written in laymans terms. Whether you are a veterinary student or just a new horse owner, you can literally see why your horse moves the way he does, why his body works the way that it does, and why he even behaves the way that he does. There is so much information about other farm animals also...dogs, goats, cows, deer, etc.
A great guide to understanding what your vet is talking about also.
This book will never be out dated!

Required Text

Required text for a college class. Wasn't the cheapest choice either, the IPad had a version at $20 less.
I did like the ease of moving throughout the book. I loved having a digital version instead of a awkward book to haul around. Not a bad book, but I wouldn't have bought it on my own, too expensive. Several sections were extremely dry and difficult to get read. Haven't noticed any changes over the 6th edition either. Quit updating books if you aren't going to make it better.

Review is not regarding the quality of the books material

I just purchased the kindle version of the book for a class so I cannot speak to the content yet. I will say the Kindle book is a disappointment. I've never ordered a textbook so maybe this is standard but I don't like it. It loads up like a magazine not a book. The only option for changing the size is pinch and zoom. There is no reading view. It's killing my eyes because the print is so tiny and the constant pinch, zoom, downsize and swipe is a hassle to read a page. My alternative was to use it on the app for PC and that was ok. I went to load the app on my laptop so I could read on my lunch time but it won't let me pull the copy up again. I have to deregister a device.... it's my book and I paid $75 for it why can't I read it in as many locations as works for my life?

I think these types of things ought to be noted more clearly on the page when you spend this much money for a textbook.. be warned.

Solid Grounding for Target Audience

Interpersonal Communication - Relating to Others by Beebe, Beebe, and Redmond explores the way we interact with each other, and how body language, distance in space, and other issues can help or hinder the process.

The book is very well laid out, with each topic covered thoroughly in its chapter, both with text explanations and graphics. I sometimes gripe about the amount of graphics some college textbooks have, and certainly some of the graphics in this book fall into the "silly" or "useless" category. Still, many of them are quite helpful. For example, a graphic showing space zones helps make it quite clear how close or far away people stand from each other to be in different zones.

The content seems fairly strongly geared at an 18-20 year old, and while certainly many college students fall into that category, I found several of the examples fairly silly or simplified. I'm sure even young adults would appreciate a more thorough coverage of the topic and could handle a more in depth explanation.

Also, some of their examples are a bit iffy. Lance Armstrong is used in discussions about "improving performance levels". An essay talks about the US becoming the brain of the world. The authors are upset than an "incredible" (their words, meant derisively) amount of people agreed with the statement that "I am an important person". As compared with what? Should all those people be thinking they are an UNimportant person? Also, the authors stated that most people spend 80%-90% of each day communicating with others. I find that quite unlikely. Even with as wired as we are to technology, many people still spend long periods of time on solitary tasks.

Still, the book provides a solid grounding in its topic area, and especially for young adults it is geared towards communicating to them as clearly as it can. A good introduction to the material.

I purchased this book with my own funds for the purpose of taking a college course on interpersonal communication.

About the Author

Michael C. Meyer was Professor of History at the University of Arizona. A former general editor of the Hispanic American Historical Review, he authored or edited ten books on Mexico and Latin American history, including The Oxford History of Mexico (OUP, 2000).

William L. Sherman was Professor of History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and the author of Forced Native Labor in Sixteenth-Century Colonial America (1979).

Susan M. Deeds is Professor of History at Northern Arizona University. She is the author of many articles on northern Mexican colonial ethnohistory and Defiance and Deference in Colonial Mexico: Indians under Spanish Rule in Nueva Vizcaya (2003).

An Unbearable Read

For a college professor, this book will be enjoyable. But for any college student taking a class on Mexican history as a requirement will find themselves laboring over a needlessly difficult text. The book over-emphasizes on an excessively showy, pedantic writing prose and not enough effort is put towards clarity and coherence. I often found myself rereading a paragraph 2 - 3 times just to understand it. And often the book gets bogged down in mundane details instead of focusing on the big picture and identifying important themes. A book should strive to inspire interest in the reader, but this book, with all its tedium accounted for, will just bore the reader to death and the reader ultimately gains no interest in Mexican history whatsoever.

Not surprising that everyone who gave this a good rating is an instructor

I ordered this book for a 3000-level course in Mexican history. I found this book so difficult to read, incoherent, and non-student-friendly. I do not consider myself a poor reader. I am an author myself (Notarial Practice in the State of Florida, 2010), and pride myself on my exceptional reading and writing skills. But this book clearly seems to be written for persons who already have knowledge in Mexican history. Students like myself, who, although having a course of study founded in history, do not have the preexisting knowledge in the subject matter, will find this book to be extremely difficult. I often find myself having to read the same paragraph 4 times and still not understanding it, and I have never had such an issue with any other text.

It is clear that this book was intended as a textbook, yet it does not have any of the features that make a textbook student-friendly, such as footnoted vocabulary terms (instead, the book seems to expect the reader to already know the meaning of obscure Mexican terms), chapter outlines or summaries, a glossary, etc. Section summaries would be extremely helpful since I would often finish a section and not understand the main point of the section.

In my opinion, this is a book written by experts for experts, and is not one I would recommend for student use.
