Better than "Grande Illusions" ?

I own several books and DVD's on special effects make-up including both of the Grande Illusion books, Movie FX Magazine Master classes, books by Vincent Kehoe, Thurston James and more... and let me tell you this one book covers more ground then any of them. Everything from basic eyeliner and blush to full head latex appliances, costumes, props and metalwork. It has dozens of projects for you to follow along with to create some breathtaking effects.

Now that isn't to say that this is perfect, the first and most obvious problem isn't really any fault of the original authors - but the copy I got from amazon has several mistakes and printing errors. But even with these errors the book is still very easy to follow.

Other problems might be that some of the information might have gaps as suggested by another reviewer... it is hard for me to tell because I have studied this subject so much that I can fill in the blanks without really thinking.

If you are on the fence about buying this book don't be, it is in full color with amazing full page artwork of the finished designs and step by step photos of everything. This book even answered questions some "professionals" I asked could not! For the money this book is very, VERY hard to beat.

Now if only someone would put out a book this detailed about animatronics!

Definetly NOT the best book ever written on the subject.

I was looking forward to getting this book based on all the giddy reviews about it...even though the makeups on the cover looked amateurish and suspiciously poorly lit. I wish I had gone with my instincts on this one. Most of this stuff is not what I consider makeup. Its cosplay. Seriously...one of the featured "makeups" shows you how to bedazzle a burlap sack and wear it over your head.
Even the basics presented here I would have to say are misguided. For instance, it tells you to paint straight black into wax or putty scratches to give the appearance of deeper wounds. Really? That's what I used to do when I first started and didn't know any better.
In my opinion Debrecini's book is the best book on the market right now, Savini's books will give you more insight about ingenuity and artistry, and Dick Smith's Monster Makeup Handbook will continue to be pulled from my shelf a thousand times more than I will ever refer to this dog turd of a book.

Better than Grande Illusions, hands down, sorry Tom.

I never in my wildest dreams did I think there was a better book than the fabled Grande Illusions, which everyone swore by. Today is that day. While Grande Illusions does cover some information, it only contains a hand full of illustrations and only covers major parts like hair punching and break down prosthetics.

This book covers far more ground and it's information is up to date. Not that Grande Illusions is bad mind you, it's just that much of what Tom Savini had access to 20+ years is no longer in production or has changed radically since then. Going from basic makeup and foundations to full blown prosthetics and even metalwork, this book not only supplements Grande Illusions, but surpasses it in many respects.

For me, this book is a Godsend. Filled with excellent and easy-to-understand diagrams on the casting and moldmaking section really helps! Also learning how to create realistic fake eyes is something not cover by Savini, and is quite easy to do thanks to this book. All of the projects coincide with the creature gallery as well, which is really cool and quite fun if you have the time to sit through them all.

And further more, most of the supplies can be found at your local art or hardware store, making it easier to create realistic effects on a budget! Materials covered here even include silicones and Gelatine, which are the trickest of the bunch aside from industry standard Foam Rubber Latex. All in all, get this book and Grande Illusions 1&2, I feel it's worth the money.

The beauty of backlighting (Contraluz) in images of exceptional beauty

This eloquent book is a catalogue for an exhibition of the art of Juan Gatti co-sponsored by Madrid and Buenos Aires, and while for many the name of Juan Gatti may not in itself be recognizable, most assuredly the man's photographic art will be. CONTRALUZ, translated from the Spanish, means back light and the book more than demonstrates the plethora of examples of the artist's use of this technique of shooting images.

Juan Gatti, born in Buenos Aires in 1950 has played a key role in defining the styles and images of some of the most important creators in Argentina and in his second home of Madrid. This catalogue presents the first time the work of Juan Gatti was seen and studied in an autonomous way in two different ways: a retrospective of his work applied to the work of other artists and secondly through Contraluz, his personal project which first shows a completely personal artwork as work not applied to other people's work.

Juan Gatti has received Spain's National Design Award 2004 and the Gold Medal for Merit in Fine Arts in 2010.   In 1980 he settled in Madrid where he worked as art director for the music label CBS Spain until 1985. In 1985 he opened his own studio and began to work as a graphic designer, art director and photographer for brands such as Sybilla, Martine Sitbon, Chloe, Karl Lagerfeld, Jesus del Pozo, Loewe, Zara and Elena Benarroch.  From 1988 he started graphic design projects on films by Pedro Almodovar: Women on the Verge of a of nerves, �tame, High Heels, Talk to Her, Bad Education, Volver, Broken Embraces and The Skin I Live, among others.  The other part, which is the title of the exhibition, Contraluz, is his most personal work. Using the aesthetics of the frame, the images appear neatly trimmed on a black background forming a unitary universe in which light appears and gives meaning to the forms. Here, the iconography of Juan Gatti, who has normally been associated with that properly he has used in editorial work, expands and manages objects that have the same entity as the human figure: objects are treated as both images known to the eye and manipulated by backlighting which gives them a fantasy aspect.  Contrauz represents the world as the visual universe of Juan Gatti.  Grady Harp, March 13

About the Author

Dr. Adrian Kilcoyne graduated from Trinity College Dublin in 1995. Following time as a Registrar in Reproductive Medicine in London, he spent some time as a Specialist Registrar in Public Health Medicine in Oxford followed by some years as a GP. He completed a Masters in Public Health at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and a Masters in Business Administration at Warwick Business School. He joined the pharmaceutical industry in 2006 to become a Senior Clinical Research Physician in Diabetes at Eli Lilly. He has since held Medical Director positions at Baxter Healthcare and Roche and is now Medical Director at Sanofi Pasteur MSD, a dedicated vaccine company. Adrian has completed the Diploma in Pharmaceutical Medicine and is a Member of the Faculty of Pharmaceutical Medicine and has completed Higher medical Training in Pharmaceutical medicine.

Daniel O'Connor is a Leicester medical graduate with a background in cancer research, histopathology and oncology. He joined the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) as a Medical Assessor in 2006 from a clinical lecturer post at UCL/UCH/Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research. He works in the licensing division of the MHRA, mainly reviewing oncology products and is also the UK representative on the Committee for Orphan Medicinal Products (COMP). He completed specialist training in Pharmaceutical Medicine in 2012. He is a fellow of the Foulkes Foundation.

Dr. Phil Ambery qualified in medicine from the University of Bristol in 1994. He undertook registrar training in the South-West of England and in Sydney, before returning to the UK in 2000 to study diabetes and endocrinology before leaving the NHS to work for GlaxoSmithKline. Since then he has held various posts in the GSK commercial organisation and latterly as a clinical program leader in the metabolic and cardiovascular pathways group at Glaxo. He is also an honorary clinical fellow at Addenbrooke's Hospital Cambridge, and a GMC specialist partner. He has a number of publications in the field of diabetes and cardiovascular medicine, and on the MRCP examination.

About the Author
Brian Overland, drawing on his long experience with technology, training, and writing, is uniquely qualified to make needed information readily accessible and to simplify difficult concepts. Great Book

This is a great book that gets to the point quickly. Bought other C++ books by very knowledgeable authors, but they tend to spend a lot of (boring) time making sure you know how smart they are. This book will give you a good foundation in C++ to build on, quickly. This is the first C++ book I have been able to get through. I have about 15 years of programming experience, but never really got to work with C++. This book really makes the transition easy. Start with this one first, I wish that I had.

Terrific value for your money!

I can't believe this is the first review! This book is amazing both for the quality and the price (the kindle version is so inexpensive, I thought at first it was a mistake).

After several years using other languages, mostly Objective C, I had to return to C++ this morning. I played around around for a few hours, and it was obvious I needed a brush up. There were many changes in C++ 11 that I wasn't aware of...

The book certainly did live up to it's title: I was not only impatient, I was in a crazy hurry. I bought it this morning, around 11. It is now 20:00 (that's 8 PM, my dear american friends ;-) and I just finished reading it. This is BY FAR the best intro to C++ I've seen: short (for a C++ book) and to the point.

If you need to learn C++ or brush up your skills, by all means buy it. The author did a terrific job. Thank you so much and congrats! :-)

I like it

There's no filler and the explanations are cogent. This book outlines the elements of the language and illustrates how they work to form a cohesive whole. It's not narrative, so I can skip the parts I'm already comfortable with, and there are no cloying attempts at personalization. If you prefer to mainline your knowledge, this is a good hit.
